International Star Registry

How stupid are people anyway?  I really need to come up with a scam as awesome as this one.  Bilk millions of people out of their money for doing absolutely nothing.  I've had to set people straight about this company on more then one occasion.  I always get the argument "Oh no, you get your star name registered in 'book form in the US copyright office' so its official."  I guess advertising really works.

Maybe I'll start offering a service to name an animal after you for a fee.  Once in a while I send a copy of my list of new animal names in to the copyright office to make it official.  But somehow I don't think people will be coming back from African safaris telling their friends "It was awesome!  we saw a JoanWalker hunt down and kill a JohnathanBrooks right next to a whole herd of StevenMoores!"  Likewise, I'm sure that astronomers are not saying "Hey, I just discovered an Earthlike planet orbiting FredMackintyre!"

So who wants an animal named after them?  I'm offering it to my friends here first so don't miss out on this rare opportunity!

I "named" a star for one of my ex's for Valentine's Day.  Made it seem like I did something extraordinary for her instead spending the same amount of money on stupid normal crap.  Yup got whatever I wanted in return. :awedance:

I want a star named after me but not some bullshit star, I want the real deal, i want the sun to be renamed the brian that would be awesome our entire civilization is orbiting me, that would def get me some pussy for sure probably lol.

The pricing can even be adjusted according the planet type.  After all, we all know a rocky planet that has a mass comparable to earth and lies in the habitable zone is MUCH more valuable than a searing hot super-Jupiter whizzing around a neutron star. :grin:

So do they litterally just write down the "real" name of the star in some book and put your name next to it, then register the work for a US copyright and claim that this somehow makes it "legal" or "official"?  Sounds like that's what you're saying.

If that's the case, then it seems like their work wouldn't be protectable under copyright anyways- would be interesting to see someone challenge the copyright if its actually registered.  Maybe start selling copies of their 'atlas'.  Doesn't sound like they could do anything if you're careful not to give them a trademark case.

We could also charge by what stage the planet is in.  If the planet is an ice world, call it Stage 1.  If its super hot or near death, call it a Stage 10.  That would give people another thing to brag about and compare themselves to others.  "Ha you own a stage 8, I own a stage 1 and two stage 4's."

It doesnt matter if the work is actually protected by copyright.  Simply saying that it is registered in book form at the copyright office is enough to fool people into thinking there is some legitimacy.

Right, I figured that, but my point was that since it isn't a properly copyrightable work if its just a registry, then you could conceivably challenge the copyright and make them unable to claim that air of legitimacy in future advertisements (though I'm assuming they add some trivial creative work to the book, introduction or something, like map makers do to try and stop people from being able to copy the thing wholesale).  I would imagine selling their registry would also have great piss off value, also.  I suppose its too much to expect the target audience to do a web search and find the "competitors" and become clued in to the fact that it really isn't a "star naming service" but just a scam preying off misleading ads and confused people.

My grandparents have some stars via this method, lol.  I'll have to see what their certificates say.

I'd want coordinates of its location.  How do we know the company isn't naming 1 star a million times and just saying it's recording in some "star registry book".  Is there such thing?:syringe::mushroom2:
