clearing registry to reset trial period
    #3058922 - 08/27/04 06:17 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I'm interested in trying to use a shareware program again now that the initial trial period is expired. It seems like it must just be some switch it's triggered on my harddrive that says ok he's done and I'd like to reset it. Anyone know if this is possible. Any websites that talk about this?

You might be able to get around it by changing your system clock back a year or something.

Or get a crack

EDIT: I've had some good luck with cracks.am.  Sometimes I'll have to try a few of their cracks for a certain program before I find one that works.  And like in the post below this one, watch out for all the porn ads there.

I wouldn't recommend fucking with your registry for some shareware program. Get a crack from somewhere. www.filedown.com is a good place to look, they update daily, but beware porn popups

Or try RegCleaner.

for cracks try astalavista.com . You can search for cracks from a dropdown list of about 30 sights each with a description like: popup, clean, dialer, porn banner etc so you can avoid the popup nightmare which is usually the case when searching for cracks. Its a good idea to run ad-ware or spybot-seach and destroy after searching for cracks.

To avoid houndreds of pop-ups, dialers, trojans, and all that shit, don't use Internet Explorer. Just try Opera or something. Best source of cracks is eDonkey, you can download crack from it, without seeing tons banners like "Enlarge your penis"...

I f you have unistalled it regclean may be able to find all the entries. In the future you can use a registry tracking tool that will track changes to the registry durring an install. Then it is easy to go back later and undo those changes.

One fun experiment, if you can at least read assembly, is to disassemble the program and trace through it to find where it references the registry. That will give you the registry key and any obfuscation that is used to hide the data within that key. Then you can modify the registry key manually to prevent the program from realizing it should be expired. I have used this technique on many full featured demos to get unlimited use out of them.

You could also edit the program in a hex editor to jmp to the command after the registry check. This is also useful for programs that hide the expiration in the binary file itself or in a dense config file rather than the registry. Basically this is creating your own crack, and not much more difficult then modifying the registry.

Heya PNutButta, I hear ya when you talk about the disassembly. I've heard about doin that sorta thing to exe files for quite a while now but have neva actually tried it myself. Do you know of any disassembling programs in particular that are better than others?? Cheers!

Umm, I've gotten around this dozens of times by just setting my clock back. For whatever reason those cheesy trial periods set based on your clock, so setting it back before the time you set it up should work just fine. While all the other recommendations might aid you in learning something, nothing beats the five second clock fix method IMO.
