chronic pain? pinched nerve?
    #12463884 -

Hey guys. so for a long time I've been having upper back pains.
Its pretty constant soarness from my upper back.
It gets worse through the day, especially if I work (I'm a cook and we don't have padded floors)
I do have nice shoes, and they help a lot, but its still there.

I've been thinking of getting some flexoril (unfortunately I only have the financial ability to acquire it illegally, funny that thats cheaper than legally......).  Any thoughts if this will help.

I also occasionally (1-2x a week) get, and not sure if its related, a shooting pain right between the bottoms of the shoulder blades, just to the right (looking at my back) of my spinal cord.  I can best describe it as a stabbing pain. I can usually work through it but not always.  Is this a pinched nerve? anything I can do for this?

I have suffered intense back pain for 20+ years and only recently has it gotten better. I've never had a car accident or any trauma to cause my pain, MRI's dont show any thing but my pain has been intense for 20+ years. So my advice is not for those that have had physical damage done to discs etc...but this advice will help you also.

Thanks to daily stretching, a memory foam mattress and an inversion table my sciatic nerve and other pains between my shoulder blades have gone away.
My g/f never had back pain her whole life, then one day it started. I started taking her to the chiropractor and it wasn't helping. And then my back pain started getting much worse, I realized the mattress needed to be changed as it was old. I Switched to a quality memory foam mattress and her pain went away in 1 day and hasn't come back. My pain eased a lot as well and now I'm not waking up with back pain any more. Memory foam mattresses are fantastic back support and very comfortable.
They can be found much cheaper online then in retail stores. As well if you can't afford a new mattress, they make memory foam mattress toppers to go on top of your existing mattress. Also Craigslist.org you can find great deals from people moving and selling cheap.

But the next step....because my pain still wasn't completely gone, I bought a Teeter Hang Up INVERSION TABLE......freaking AMAZING!!! check out the reviews on the net....99.9% satisfaction.

Inversion tables stretch your spine out naturally from gravity. The spine naturally gets realigned, and decompresses your back relieving pinched nerves. Medical clinics can charge as much as $5K to decompress your back when a home inversion table can be found for as low as $100. I've seen these very models and other models from recent years for as low as $100 on Craigslist.org. Chiropractors don't want you to know about them because they would lose to much business.
Inversion tables are awesome.
Now I have my own chiropractor at home every day.

could very well be a pinched nerve, but maybe not. do you ever have numbness or weakness on that same side? any other symptoms that correlate to this pain? if so, do the symptoms change as the pain grows throughout the day? numbness or weakness on that same side would be a large indicator that it is neurological...

numbness or weakness, not that I've noticed.

any other symptoms, umm I mean it always happens when I'm doing some kinda, even remotely, strenuous motion. I'm a cook. so it always only bothers me if I'm lifting something a little heavy, or trying to reach plates on the other side of the line, so leaned forward and stretching, trying to pull the hoods out so reaching up and stretching. etc.  It doesn't always bother me when I do this, but more often than not.  I haven't really ever noticed numbness or weakness. as far as the symptoms being inconsistent YES.  I mean, my back soreness, not so much, and that probably is just being too hard on my back obviously.  This pain though, sometimes I won't even notice it for weeks and then it'll hit and the frequency definitely goes up. If it happens once during a day its more likely to happen a few more times that day.

That's really odd, that pretty much sounds like the pain I get from my car wreck.

I've got disc issues in my lower thoracic.. it's the reaching over and lifting that's impossible to do.

Definitely  on a new mattress if you can afford it, that helped me more than meds ever would. I got a no-name brand memory foam Queen for like $600, which was easy to make it two days with some phone calls. Flexeril helps.. I'm assuming the muscles around the area are tight.

You'll probably need an MRI.

If you put your hands on your hips, see if you notice a difference when you turn slowly to the left. Go as far as you can to the right. Do you go as far back as you can on both sides, or does one stop short?

BTW, I updated my first post with more information and some other  ideas.

Yes there are a lot of no name brand memory foam mattresses out there that are cheap. Some will even let you make payments. I researched a good one, Angelbeds.com
They offer payment plans and they also sell the memory foam mattress toppers.

Nismo, I'm no doctor but it really sounds to me like your back is just out of alignment. Before you spend a lot of money on chiropractors, MRI's, pain meds...try buying an inversion table off Craigslist for cheap. Give it a try for about a month at least. Usually the results can be seen within a day to a week.

interesting you mention that, the first time this happened, I was lifting a HEAVY table at work and moving it, thats when I noticed the shooting pain, BUT now that I think about it, I had dropped my bike 1-2 weeks prior to this, not a bad accident, just got caught in some sand while turning onto the street. wonder if its related.

twisting counterclockwise I can twist about halfway between 1/4 turn and backkward but I'm just past a 1/4 turn to the right.....

will do. I'll keep an eye on there for one. price was my biggest concern if I can find one for around $100 or so... thats a lot cheaper than Dr's! you're not the first person I've heard preach the benefits of tho

Now that I think about it, my doctor mentioned an inversion table about 4 years ago when I showed no improvement with phys therapy, epidurals, facet injections... the works.

I just didn't want to mess anything up on my own because there was a lawsuit, so I subsequently stayed away from chiropractors etc.

If you can't turn equally on each side at least you know where the muscle injury is... I'm sure they're tight as hell so Flexeril should definitely help.

A doc will just throw you into PT as soon as possible - orthopedics are so afraid of malpractice and the spine is such a tricky thing that they work from the most simplest treatment to the top. So without insurance, you're looking at a very costly diagnosis, with conservative treatment all the way through...

This is true, the back specialist I went to after my MRI put me in PT and it did help a lot. Although it is expensive!
Thus I learned the importance of daily stretching and going to the gym. But even when I go through my months of being lazy and dont want to go to the gym, I stick with daily stretching and it helps a lot.

I herniated a disc in my lower (lumbar) back.  the herniation pinched a nerve causing strong burning/aching in my right leg.  After 3 months I got a surgical procedure called a microdiscectomy to remove the herniation.  This is a common procedure where the surgeon cuts down to the nerve then removes any tissues that are compressing it.

after my surgery I felt much better, but I am still fairly laid up and working on getting better.  I believe that finding ways to increase flexibility are key; yoga, stretching, etc.  I started swimming every morning which helps immensely.

strengthening stomach muscles increases your body's natural back support mechanisms.  Movement and exercise helps remove inflammation and also increases blood flow.

anti-inflammatories can help.  I use ibuprofen or naproxen though not at the same time.  did you know that many medicinal mushrooms like Reishi have anti-inflammatory effects?

good luck.  PM me if you want to talk or need some advice from a fellow sufferer.
