Teh End is Nigh (IPv4 v. IPv6 Update)...
    #13865722 -

The New Terror: IPv4 Address Exhaustion. This is the adrenachrome of computer problems. It could make Y2K look like ginger beer.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12306573

When the internet was first created, nobody was thinking about cable-modems, ip-based appliances, or smart phones, and it was thought that 4 Billion addresses were enough. I mean, who knew that your microwave needed to send live video of your Hot-Pocket to your smartphone? I certainly didn't...

Well, we're going to reach our 4 Billion address limit in a few months, and a wrath of biblical proportions may be visited upon us: planes might start dropping out of the sky like stunned birds; errant nuclear missiles may be exchanged like secret santa gifts at the office; dogs and cats might start living in sin; coke might turn into pepsi; Justin Bieber might develop facial hair. Yes, all of these horrors may come to pass; all of these, and many more...

So, if the toilet paper aisle at your local supermarket starts to look like the Zombie Apocalypse has started, you'll know why. You can thank me later...

There is hope, however. On the horizon is a small, sightless child called IPv6. The product of a virgin birth, it is prophesied that IPv6 will lead all of us to greener pastures; a place where people of all races will live in peace and harmony, in a world of eternal abundance, and where God's most noble and fearsome creatures (lions, and tigers, and bears, oh, my) will be tame and wander around like animals in a petting zoo on Prozacâ„¢ -- much the like cover of a "Watchtower" magazine...

SO REPENT, MOTHER-FUCKERS! REPENT! It's not too late to save your eternal souls by accepting Teh Internetz az ur 1 tru God!!1

Meh. Most people use privately addressed subnets and NAT anyway...

I think we'll be using IPv4 for a couple years to come.
As long as businesses continue to use Windows XP at least...

And IPv6 has been around since the 90s.
Calling it a small, sightless child is a bit dramatic, n'est-ce pas?

Well, I guess I can't say I wasn't warned.

i cant wait for v6.. its so much easier. get rid of all this NAT nonsense.

it will definitely be like 5 or 6 years before we are knee deep in the transition phase. 10 years till total migration.

they have been saying IPv4 is on the verge of running out of addresses for at least 5 years... probably more. i seem to recall posting an article about it on another forum when I was about 13 years old, which was almost 9 years ago

i met the CEO of ARIN last June. he said there was somethink like 7 or 8 v4 addresses left to be assigned. they give out around 10 a year.

and IIRC, ARIN is no longer distributing v4 addresses.. they have been giving away /48 v6s for free though.

to put that into perspective..

a Class A v4 address (the largest) can accommodate 16777216 hosts.

a single /48 v6 address can accommodate 1208925819614629174706176 hosts!

there is something like 10^30 available addresses for each person on the planet.

That means we could assign an unique IPv6 address to each can of tomato soup on the planet. This could go a long way towards streamlining the now cumbersome process of shopping for, and the cooking of, tomato soup... and this digitization of tomato soup could serve as a catalyst for other rapid advancements towards a transhuman utopia...
