Grateful Dead show archiving update
    #2235130 - 01/11/04 06:59 PM (18 years, 9 days ago)

Well, so far i have 42 shows. 19 on audio cds, and all 42 still on the hard drive.

Now comes the time to burn the data cd archives. I went to Wallymart and got 100 more cd-r's and 4 storage cases. The cases were on clearance for $2.50 per case. Each holds 96 cds so I have enough for the forseeable future now.

I'm finding that each show is usually always more than 700 MB. Usually 800 mb - 1.2 GB each. Looks like each show will take 2 cd-r's to archive.

I was thinking of waiting till I get my DVD burner and archiving on DVD's, but I thought better of it. DVD's would hold like 4 shows each, but cost so damned much that using cd-r's would be way cheaper.

So, anyway, I'm a cd burnin' fool now!

Wow you really are a burning fool.  And archiving the original shns is pretty heardcore.  I certainly don't do it.  All the shows on my list are in audio format exclusively.  And when I mentioned trading before, I meant the old fashioned way through snail mail.  So if you see something that you really want from my list, we could do a trade if you don't mind getting a show in audio format.  I don't have a server I could upload to or anything like that so trading through ftp is not really an option.  Am I making sense, I'm too stoned to tell?  :stash:

Notapillow: That's because I'm starting at the bottom of the list and working my way up. I'm in the 80's now, and soon I hope to be in the 70's and 60's. Believe me, I'm getting them all.

kosmic: I'm the type of guy that try as I might, I always scratch up and break cds. For me, archiving the SHN files is the only way my collection is sure to survive!

I'm a computer noob basically, where can I learn about snail mail?

I'd be happy to trade shows whatever way.

Yeah by snail mail I mean postal mail. The following link goes into greater depth than needed. Basically any way you can get a show here without harming the CD. Most people use bubble mailers and as a general rule you shouldn't write on the CDs you send.

Oh ok. LOL "snail mail" that's funny!

I have cd roms that come in 5 colors. (Good quality sony cd-r's though) So I can write on a piece of paper what color cd has what.

I'll be happy to trade some shows. Instead of sending each other blank cd's like in that link, I suggest we just do outright trades. I'll PM you. Anyone else who want's to trade with me can PM me too.

Yeah that's what I meant originally. That whole B&P thing doesn't apply to our situation.

download and install a web server,(apache is the best imo) then the person downloading the music hasta have a download manager, like download accelerator plus, which will allow you to pause the download and continue at a more convient time. if u need some help setting up apache or dap just lemme know.

Alrighty then, thanks a lot. I just DL'ed apache. Looks like I have another textbook worth of operating manual to study though.

Well, I'm gonna do it. After I study this thing I'll get back to everyone I've been talking about trading with.

If I have problems I'll ask for help, thanks!

Kosmic, get on board with this, it looks like a lot of fun!

Here's my first question. I just wanna make sure before I go reading that big instruction manual...

Do you have to have a website for people to go to for this thing to work, or will it work all by itself on my machine somehow like kazza or something ?

Yeah I'll download and try out those programs and then get back to you. And I'm certain you don't need a web page. Like you guessed, it's kinda like Kazaa in that the program alone will allow for the exchanging of files. At least that's how I understand it.

when its installed and u see the little thing with the green arrow on it in your systray, your hosting a web server. goto http://youripaddresshere and you will see what ur serving.. erase all the shit in apache2/htdocs/ and put your mp3's in there, then ppl can just goto http://youripaddresshere/mp3filenamehere.mp3 and it will start downloading.

Ok my server is set up and running. Does it limit the number of uploaders? Is there any way to set it up to restrict access so that 100 people don't try to DL from it all at once?

I'm ready to run a test, I have 12-31-81 New Years Eve Oakland ready on my machine, who want's it?

setting up authentication can be kinda difficult to explain, i suggest putting a index.html file in the htdocs then put a folder in htdocs with your mp3's ppl wont be able to access the folder unless u tell them the folder name. so the folder name would essentially be a password.

Yeah, I was lost too. But it's easy. Just download and install apache, goto the program files/apache group/htdocs and delete the contents. Then put what you wan't people to get in that folder. It's that simple. Then you have to give your IP address to whoever you want to download from you.

But, amyloid, is it possible to set a password?
