Re: Anyone else that is not a current gun owner thinking...... [Re: AlteredAgain]

Banning guns would simply make guns more appealing to most people, especially those sitting behind the television, which is spitting out mostly sex and violence, thus glamorizing the use of firearms further. If someone wanted to rob, pillage, murder or steal they will find a way to do it, with or without guns. Be it a blade, a bludgeon, a bomb, an HIV infested needle, a fire, chemically, or even poison your ass.

I fully intent to purchase a handgun in the near future (Kimber 1911), I would already own one but I need to wait until I get paid back a good chunk of change I loaned to a friend to keep him from financial crisis. :awesomenod:

Frankly though, I'm not much for concealed carry... I'll be taking the class soon and getting my license, but rarely would I carry my firearm. Mostly I would just take it to the range. Or carry it out camping and hiking, and that's more for animal protection than people protection.

If it wasn't for firearms however, the 13 colonies of America would have NEVER broken free from the British Empire. Just something to think about.

No one is going to take your guns away.

And I don't really see why people say "gun control" like it's a bad thing. Guns SHOULD be hard to get. At least the first time. Once you've proved you can handle a weapon, use it responsibly, and aren't batshit insane I don't care what you keep in your home for self defense or use to kill animals with. But I shouldn't be able walk into a shop, wait a week, and then go on a rampage.

Then again I suppose the dude that shot Gifford could have just as easily gotten one off the street so I don't know what the REAL solution is. I'm not sure of anything other than the fact that we have way too many and they're way easy to get.

How exactly would you prove you can handle it, use it responsibly, and aren't insane?  Checking your criminal record and making you wait a few days is a good system I think.  It stops crimes of passion/heat of the moment and it keeps guns from convicted violent criminals.  That's a good policy I think.

The dude who shot Gifford made multiple death threats that were ignored by police.  The people around him knew something wasn't right with him, so did his parents.  This shooting could have been prevented.

Dude sorry, but Hitler came to power by being elected, he abused his position to gain further power, read up on it first and then talk. Antisemitism was kind of a fad in Europe back in those times, in fact back in most European history, again read then talk.

Wait, what is the problem that you're trying to provide a solution for?

Mentally unstable sociopaths? They're a small percentage of our population that will never go away. What makes you sure there are too many guns? The fact that a negligible percentage of our population are killed by them?

If anything the military has too many weapons, not the civilian population. If you took all material objects away from people, we'd beat and bite each other to death. The fact that these occasional events cause such a big shit storm is a testament to our safety, nothing more.

We have certifications for lots of things. Usually it involves taking a class of some sort.

I'm not proposing that I have a perfect solution. Nor am I sure exactly what is required to buy a gun since I've never attempted to do it. However I've heard it's a pretty easy and painless process in America.

By law I was required to invest hundreds of hours into learning how to drive a car before I could get a license. But after the process it requires very little effort to maintain that license unless I have multiple/major infractions against me. I don't see how owning a gun is any less dangerous.

But again I don't propose any perfect solution as most criminals could obtain guns on the street. Regardless, I think it's an issue that requires re-thinking and I don't think "control" is a necessarily a bad thing.

Sorry man. Hitler was not elected by the people.

"Having become Chancellor [*he was appointed Chancellor, not elected], Hitler foiled all attempts by his opponents to gain a majority in parliament. Because no single party could gain a majority, Hitler persuaded President Hindenburg to dissolve the Reichstag again. Elections were scheduled for early March, but on 27 February 1933, the Reichstag building was set on fire.[77] Since a Dutch independent communist was found in the building, the fire was blamed on a communist plot. The government reacted with the Reichstag Fire Decree of 28 February which suspended basic rights, including habeas corpus. Under the provisions of this decree, the German Communist Party (KPD) and other groups were suppressed, and Communist functionaries and deputies were arrested, forced to flee, or murdered.

Campaigning continued, with the Nazis making use of paramilitary violence, anti-communist hysteria, and the government's resources for propaganda. On election day, 6 March, the NSDAP increased its result to 43.9% of the vote, remaining the largest party, but its victory was marred by its failure to secure an absolute majority, necessitating maintaining a coalition with the DNVP.[78]

On 21 March, the new Reichstag was constituted with an opening ceremony held at Potsdam's garrison church. This "Day of Potsdam" was staged to demonstrate reconciliation and unity between the revolutionary Nazi movement and "Old Prussia" with its elites and virtues. Hitler appeared in a tail coat and humbly greeted the aged President Hindenburg.

Because of the Nazis' failure to obtain a majority on their own, Hitler's government confronted the newly elected Reichstag with the Enabling Act that would have vested the cabinet with legislative powers for a period of four years. Though such a bill was not unprecedented, this act was different since it allowed for deviations from the constitution. Since the bill required a ⅔ majority in order to pass, the government needed the support of other parties. The position of the Centre Party, the third largest party in the Reichstag, turned out to be decisive: under the leadership of Ludwig Kaas, the party decided to vote for the Enabling Act. It did so in return for the government's oral guarantees regarding the Church's liberty, the concordats signed by German states and the continued existence of the Centre Party.

On 23 March, the Reichstag assembled in a replacement building under extremely turbulent circumstances. Some SA men served as guards within while large groups outside the building shouted slogans and threats toward the arriving deputies. Kaas announced that the Centre Party would support the bill with "concerns put aside," while Social Democrat Otto Wels denounced the act in his speech. At the end of the day, all parties except the Social Democrats voted in favour of the bill. The Communists, as well as some Social Democrats, were barred from attending. The Enabling Act, combined with the Reichstag Fire Decree, transformed Hitler's government into a legal dictatorship."

The problem I suppose is keeping guns out of the hands of would-be murderers/criminals. As I said control could be helpful but there is still a huge black market.

What makes me say we have too many? Probably the fact that we have more guns per capita than any other country. And the fact that we have more firearm related deaths than most countries. Now some might say the former is not a problem and unrelated to the latter. In some instances they'd be right- after all if you have 200 hunting rifles in a cabinet you're probably an enthusiast/sportsman and not a criminal. However we should still do everything in our power to stop preventable deaths.

Yay discussion about Hitler!!!

you forgot this bit:

Quote:
Against this violent backdrop, Hitler's party gained a shocking victory in the Reichstag, obtaining 107 seats (18.3%, 6,406,397 votes). The Nazis became the second largest party in Germany. In Bavaria the party gained 17.9% of the vote, though for the first time this percentage was exceeded by most other provinces: Oldenburg (27.3%), Braunschweig (26.6%), Waldeck (26.5%), Mecklenburg-Strelitz (22.6%), Lippe (22.3%) Mecklenburg-Schwerin (20.1%), Anhalt (19.8%), Thuringen (19.5%), Baden (19.2%), Hamburg (19.2%), Prussia (18.4%), Hessen (18.4%), Sachsen (18.3%), Lubeck (18.3%) and Schaumburg-Lippe (18.1%).

and this one:

Quote:
Hitler had polled over 11 million votes but was still behind Hindenburg. The second and final round took place on 10 April: Hitler (36.8% 13,418,547) lost out to Paul von Hindenburg (53.0% 19,359,983) whilst KPD candidate Thälmann gained a meagre percentage of the vote (10.2% 3,706,759).

He was elected, then shit happened, doesn't really change the fact that alot of people voted for him.

Neither of those state he was elected do they? That's like saying the US elected John McCain for president.

He didn't run on a platform of anti-semitism anyway.  He ran on a platform of returning Germany to a properous nation and undoing aspects of Treaty of Versailles he felt were unjust.  His major anti-semitic speeches came after he was in power.

Anyways, I don't want to argue.  My point is that you cast a blanket judgment on the whole population of a country, insinuating that all Germans were anti-semitic and that's just not true.

Sorry if it came out that way, I didn't mean to imply that the whole german population was bent on killing jews. I just said that them having guns wouldn't have done stopping nazism any good since most of the population was on their side and there was a general antisemitic sentiment in germany at that time which could have led to some ugly things if some people did in fact have guns.

Nazi Germany was supported by it's people, if they had guns they would have slaughtered Jews with them.

The Nazis had guns, but..

What if the Jews had guns?

Would there have been a Kristallnacht if the Jews were known to be armed to the teeth? Would the Nazis attempting the Liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto not be met by a hail of bullets from every home and window?

Hitler fought in the East, and West. If the Jews had been armed, it would have been an all out civil war, a third front. Aktion Reinhard would not have been economically viable and also quite unaffordable from a military strategic point of view, it would have tied up resources of the reich, drawing those away from the war effort.

What if the population of Europe had been armed like the population of the USA was at the time? There would have been a lot more of this:

Quote:
Simo Hayha had a fairly boring life in Finland. He served his one mandatory year in the military, and then became a farmer. But when the Soviet Union invaded his homeland in 1939, he decided he wanted to help his country.

Since the majority of fighting took place in the forest, he figured the best way to stop the invasion was to grab his trusty rifle, a couple of cans of food and hide in a tree all day shooting Russians. In six feet of snow. And 20-40 degrees below zero.

Of course when the Russians heard that dozens of their men were going down and that it was all one dude with a rifle, they got fucking scared. He became known as "The White Death" because of his white camouflage outfit, and they actually mounted whole missions just to kill that one guy.

They started by sending out a task force to find Hayha and take him out. He killed them all.

Then they tried getting together a team of counter-snipers (which are basically snipers that kill snipers) and sent them in to eliminate Hayha. He killed all of them, too.

Over the course of 100 days, Hayha killed 542 people with his rifle. He took out another 150 or so with his SMG, sending his credited kill-count up to 705.

Since everyone they had was either too dead or too scared to go anywhere near him, the Russians just carpet-bombed everywhere they thought he might be. Supposedly, they had the location right, and he actually got hit by a cloud of shrapnel that tore his coat up, but didn't actually hurt him, because he's the fucking White Death, damn it.

Finally on March 6th, 1940, some lucky bastard shot Hayha in the head with an exploding bullet. When some other soldiers found him and brought him back to base, he "had half his head missing." The White Death had finally been stopped...

...for about a week. In spite of having come down with a nasty case of shot-in-the-face syndrome, he was still very much alive, and regained consciousness on March 13, the very day the war ended.

Hmmm...might have helped the jews some, but then again tanks and bombs don't suffer from a bullet-hails all that much. And about the white death, while an awesome story (is that by any chance from cracked?) I really doubt that such acts decide the fate of a war, since strategic objectives are already armed as much as they can arm them, and it's basically fire-power against fire-power.

But that's not the point, I simply don't understand why ameircans seem to think that their guns are the only thing keeping the government from storming their homes? And it hasn't been explained to me who from the government they are afraid of, and why would they storm their homes?

I don't think many people believe that this is imminent, it's just an insurance policy. During WWII the fed gov rounded up all the Asians and stripped them of their homes to throw them in camps, spurred by fear of espionage. Many of them never got their property or lives back.

I simply don't understand why you seem to think that it couldn't happen again, to any number of American minorities, be it gays, atheists, Muslims, etc. Our media today would have an even easier time convincing the average Joe that a "cleansing" is necessary...
