Add one, take one away, what does it matter?

The fact is that since the constellations on the ecliptic are 30 degrees wide and since orbital precession has slowly shifted the ecliptic by 30 degrees since astrology was invented, everyone is actually the sigh BEFORE the sign they think they are. Capricorns are actually Sagittarius.

Most people who believe in this hogwash never bother to study basic orbital mechanics so they're unaware of this. Astrologers who ARE aware of this little problem never mention it because it would fuck up their system. Imagine the loss of revenue for astrologers if suddenly the supposed traits that apply to Capricorns no longer apply because they go with Sagittarius instead.

This is not unlike how the Catholic Church refused to acknowledge that there were moons around Jupiter because it would fuck up THEIR system of the Earth being in the center of god's universe and the stars and sun revolve around us. They even sentenced to life in prison a gentle old scientist who tried to show them the truth in his telescope. They destroyed his telescope too, by the way. :nonono:

I'd never even heard of it until 2 days ago... now I'm seeing news stories all over the internet

I posted this in another thread, but here you go.

Western astrology is based on the tropical zodiac, which centers around the sun's position during the changing of the seasons (i.e. moving between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn).  Vedic astrology is based on the sidereal zodiac, which makes use of the precession of equinoxes, and thus has kept up with the changing positions of constellations.  Therefore, this news only affects Vedic astrology, and not Western astrology.  I honestly don't know why this stuff has been making news.  The precession of equinoxes has been known about since ancient Greece.

I honestly don't know why it's suddenly in the news.  Even the Ophiuchus part is not new.  I think maybe some mainstream journalist thought he'd taunt astrologers with some information that he foolishly thought they didn't already know.

I heard about this 20 years ago but the 12 signs system is too popular already

and poorly informed people can be very defensive with their beliefs.

when someone asks, I still say I'm a scorpio :shrug:

But the thing is, you're still uniformed if you think this changes anything in Western astrology anyway.  The Western system is not based on the location of the constellations.  It's based on the changing of the seasons.

All the people I know that are into astrology base it off of the constellations, and they are all westerners more or less.

If we're talking about amateurs and not professional astrologers, then sure.  But if you go to a Western astrologer(as opposed to a Vedic astrologer), they're going to use the tropical zodiac.

As an easy way to remember this, think about the names of the two tropics:  The Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.  The sign of Cancer begins on the Summer Solstice, when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer.  The sign of Capricorn begins on the Winter Solstice, when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn.  The signs of Aries and Libra coincide with the Spring and Fall equinoxes, respectively.  The fact that Aries is the first sign meshes with the ancient understanding of spring as a sort of new beginning.

Then frankly, I don't think you know what you're talking about.  Any professional astrologer worth his salt will understand the difference between the tropical and sidereal zodiac.  Some astrologers may prefer the sidereal zodiac, and therefore may be drawn toward Vedic astrology.  But astrologers who go by the Western system generally understand the difference.

It is certainly true that when the signs were named, they drew their names from the constellations that were there at the time.  But that does not mean that the sign is the constellation.
