Jail and Apaches
    #13741051 -

So, I went and turned myself in to the jail in Arizona, and was there for Christmas. I got out on the Wednesday before new years, I had nowhere to go, so luckily I was invited by an apache lady i just got outta jail with back to the reservation where she lives. I spent the last couple of weeks with those folks.

I gotta go back to court on the eleventh, maybe they'll drop the charges...

Meanwhile my heart broke for the Apache people. Their land is trashed, they are all drunk, and they live half-Americanized lives with very little depth or culture of their own. Sad stuff to see.

We have reservations here in Kentucky? I didn't even know to be honest.  But I practically live in Ohio because of my location, I guess that's why.

Life doesn't change itself. You have to be the one to change it so I don't feel bad for people that live in shit but do nothing to change it.

you obviously know nothing about how things are still run by the
government/BIA, some have managed to get away from it but they leave
much behind to do so, it's almost impossible to get away from the
reservation for most because it takes money and what little money they
have is now being spent on liquor and drugs, it wouldnt be so bad for
them if immigration laws were being enforced but since Arizona is one of
the border states it's a fast settling point for many illegals looking for
work making it much more difficult for any of the citizens of the first
nations to do so and believe it or not, racism against injuns still runs
rampant all over the country, many in my family have been victims or it,
my brother and sister included

That is a stupid argument. It's the government's fault that these people have no desire but to sit back and collect free money from the government but can never afford to leave the res because they blow it all on alcohol and drugs. Yeah it's societies fault

not to mention that if you can even spell your name and you have any native american ancestry you can go to just about any college in the country for FREE

Man GTFO, you have no idea how it is to grow up on a reserve the fucked up shit you see and hear about the people your surrounded by. Product of enviroment. Just cause you can go to college doesnt mean you would succeed, to a extent the got a choice in there actions but there enviroment and social standing amoung the majority has a much larger effect on the way there perception and interaction with the world. God-damn cynical son of a...

It's not so easy to leave the rez, bud, even if college is free. They go and come back.

College is a pretty (ha ha) foreign experience.

You can argue that people's deal is pretty much their fault all day, but I'm not sure it holds for the indians.

Used to live on a reservation myself.

How is it not easy to leave the res?  I know plenty of people who have. Considering my city is surrounded by several different reservations. It's no different to leave the res as it is to leave the ghetto.

The problem is, the government cuts those monthly checks to natives who stay on the res. So many of them would rather live off the government, get drunk and live in shit conditions; as opposed to working and having to pay for everything.

edit- they own all the casino's out here and I dont see them putting any of that money into improving their living conditions. So it's their own fault

I'm not blaming society, I'm blaming George Armstrong Custer. Right after
the civil war, Custer was sent to Texas to run the Bureau of Indian
Affairs. after a year or so of it he got fed up, he said "I'm now going to
fight the indians, you dont do a damn thing until I get back!". they
havent done anything since

Sounds like quite an experience.

You don't happen to go by another name, "WhirlingDervish" on another forum, do you? Not even sure exactly what it means. Didn't think it was something very common, as I've never seen it anywhere else. A quick search says it has something to do with dancing?

Maybe different reservations work differently.  I know in the one case I'm familar with, the Navajo depend on the community they've got, and don't thrive without it.

It seems kinda callous to fault them for not having adapted.

EDIT: Casino wise, I can't imagine someone as cynical as you seem to be would really be surprised that the wealth of a few doesn't translate to a revolutionary change for all.

They're a semi-nomadic race of people, man. "College" isn't part of their cultural heritage.

I'm an italian-american, btw. My people came in long after this all went down. I don't feel personally responsible for indian genocide, I just feel uncomfortable making sweeping statements about what indians should or shouldn't do.
