The Amsterdam Shag by Peter Stokkebye is a halfzware that's very, very similar to Bali Shag.

It's the only one I've tried of the line. They've got a Turkish, Danish, Norwegian, a London export, etc. A bit on the pricey side but nothing absurd considering how expensive it's all become anyway. But Krash, if you're looking for a quality RYO that is similar to Bali, that's the closest it gets.

If I could find a Dutch guy willing to send me some Zware Van Nelle tobacco, I'd be :awesantabig: ... Shit, even the Drum is better over there.

the Turkish and London Export are also really good; the Danish and Norwegian i have not tried.

Bali Shag is delicious

I would agree...

This past summer at a gathering in the woods a kind fellow rolled up a stoge for me, filled with Bali Shag. First time I had it, good stuff

I'm not a big tobacco smoker, I will occasionally have a cigarette with a friend if I've been drinking...A nicotine buzz is nice every once in a while.

Quote:
On Feb. 4, 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law an expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), to add $35 billion in funding to the program, which provides insurance for children in families making less than $80,000 a year. The additional funding comes from increasing taxes on tobacco products, with the roll-your-own and make-your-own (RYO/MYO) tobacco categories hardest hit, seeing the tax on these products go from $1.0969 per pound to$24.62 per pound, a whopping 2,400 percent increase! The tax goes into effect on April 1, 2009.

What can you do to continue to enjoy tobacco at a relatively inexpensive cost? Until the United States Treasury’s Alcohol, Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau likely changes the definition of pipe tobacco to make it taxable like RYO/MYO, you can make your own cigarettes using pipe tobacco, which at the moment will only be taxed at $2.8311 per pound.

I edited my recommendation post with something more up-to-date.

I'm bout to buy some pipe tobacco and throw it in the food processor.

You know the really sad thing is that there really isn't much of a tobacco production industry here in the US anymore, all the farms are gone. I grew up working on tobacco farms in Kentucky when I was in highschool, and when I went back home last year to visit my grandmother she was talking about how she doesn't know a single person who grows it anymore.

Yeah, I think I'm going to try and find a shop here in Jacksonville that sells it by weight. That way I can buy a bunch of sample sized portions to try out before buying a larger bag.

I wanted to try the Turkish Export the last time I bought the Dam, but I lost the plot. I'm getting 1lb shag, and will trade off with a friend for some Norwegian which is blended with oriental tobaccos like the Turkish.

They don't seem to have the Turkish available on pipetobacco.com. :frown:

You're probably right.

If I was back in Kentucky I'd plant some in the backyard and build a little shed to cure it in.

Well, my Amsterdam 'pipe tobacco' arrived today. Smells and tastes like the shag I know and love, but the cut is wide and unruly. Hand-rolling is possible but feels like I'm rolling cigs in a funhouse mirror.

I'm going to pick up some tubes and borrow my friend's injector because I think this stuff will work great with it.

Haha.

The harmonica is a nice touch there.

Just need a glass of bourbon.

Bali Shag Halfzware is my favorite tobacco by leaps and bounds, and I've found it damn hard to find as well. Drum Perique is an OK replacement, but it's still not as smooth.

For the people who only smoke occasionally, as I do, I suggest a humidor jar. They're pretty cheap, and they keep your tobacco nice and fresh.
