B Vitamin Megadoses
    #13637871 -

B vitamin supplements with massive amounts of many different types of these vitamins are becoming very common. They boost energy and, being organic precursors to neurotransmitters, can help things like mood and anxiety.

However, many of these carry risks that don't seem to be mentioned enough. Niacin can cause flushing. B6 can cause temporary or even permanent nerve damage. B12 can mess with your sleep cycles. Many others included can cause typical vitamin overdose signs like nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, etc.

Have you had any poor experiences with these massive B vitamin doses? Have they helped you? Are you wary of their dangers? It just seems like taking hundreds of daily doses of vitamins on a whim may not be as healthy as the bottle implies.

No experience with it, I don't even take a multivitamin... but your logic is sound and I think you're right to be suspicious of it.

I used to be a more strict vegetarian than I am and my doctor told me to take b12 supplements. I don't think that's entirely necessary, but he did say that you wouldn't want to do it more than once a week.

Why would you want to take b vitamins anyway? Most dietitians agree that you would only need to take supplements if you're extremely lacking, and that supplements are no substitute for vitamins from food.

I take one every now and then. It seems silly to be eating them like candy. Luckly though they are one of the vitamins that get pissed out if you have extra in your system

Even then, it still taxes your body (kidneys, liver, etc) to remove the extra from your blood.

interesting... so do you think taking a timed release b100 complex every single day might be a bit too much?

I think so, that's what I have (except not time-released) and those things are fucking loaded. They have reasonable doses of some of the vitamins in there, but others are in gross excess.

I work in the health supplements field, and I would personally add high-dose B-Vitamins to the long list of supplements with claims of great benefits that in reality do little to nothing, or have a negative impact on your body.  That is, of course, if you're a regular person and not someone who's been advised to take them because of a severe deficiency.

All day, every day at my job, people come in looking for the magic formula of pills, powders, and liquids.  Lots of them have serious conditions and I feel compassion for them and do my best to help with my limited, non-professional knowledge, but lots are just looking for a shortcut to health, an elixir of immortality, or a panacea for the kind of problems that no outside substance can solve for a person.

I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Maybe the most concerning thing is that they're starting to make nondescript daily multivitamins with those kinds of doses of B vitamins. People won't really know what they're getting, it would be easy for someone to get hurt.

Word. Many a folk disregard the big bold letters that state THESE STATEMENTS NOT EVALUATED BY THE FDA.
They're not legally bound to do jack shit. They don't even have to legally put the actual list of ingredients in there.
If supplement companies wanted to they could sell you granola and tell you it has lots of B vitamins in it, and write it on the ingredients list. When in fact it's regular old granola, and your ass thinks he's curing cancer.

But who am I to ruin someones placebo?

And that's why there's a market for placebos.

"placebo!" people yell

find me a material completely inert in the body once ingested.

there are incredibly lax regulations on placebos used in studies. the researcher could grind up chilis, put them in gel caps, wave his hand over them and call them placebos

you know we have natural dna synthesis biomachines, changing our dna to fit our environment? Bruce Lipton The New Biology Where Mind And Matter Meet

Dont trust any association with your health: ADA(fluoride), FDA(laetrile), ACS(The Cancer Report). Associations can be bought and corrupted.

how easy do you think it is though for b6 to cause any serious damage? i mean wouldn't you think our bodies are at least smart enough to have the sense to get rid of most of what's not needed?

Or maybe our bodies just trust us not to take in hundreds of doses of vitamins at once.

It can wash out vitamins to a point, but it's a fact that too much can be stressful and harmful, even just to pass through.

Yeah, that's my plan, buy a B multivitamin with more reasonable amounts.
