Panellus stipticus

Well folks, I was just wondering if anybody has had any luck or experience growing Panellus entirely outside. From what I read, Panellus Stipticus naturally grows outside in my region. I know it normally grows exclusively on decaying hardwoods, but if possible I would like to try and inoculate a live hardwood tree with it via plug spawn.

My reason for wanting this is I'm planning on constructing a Koi pond in a corner of my yard and I'm planning on enclosing the area with enthobotanicals, small outdoor mushroom beds, and dwarf ornamental trees. I think Panellus would make an excellent addition to this. If need be I have plenty of old  red oak logs lying around that I could also inoculate and even move inside the house until they're ready to fruit.

But I have a small oak tree right in the middle of the garden area that I would just love to see some luminescent fungi growing out of. Even if that means topping it and drilling out the bottom. In all honesty if I can't grow the fungi in this tree it will most likely be removed anyway. The tree has maybe a 6 inch diameter.

I've done a bit of research on this variety and unfortunately it seems to mostly deal with indoor cultivation, and I didn't see anybody using plug spawn. I know that a lower pH tends to improve the luminosity of the fungus. Oak tends to carry a rather low pH liquid in its vascular system. I know healthy trees have means to fend off fungus, but I was thinking if I could stress the tree enough to let the fungus take hold it might stand a chance, while also supplying the fungus with steady low pH moisture.

From about June till October we tend to have temps in the mid 70's to low 80's with similar Humidity. Sometimes even higher humidity.

So... What do you guys think?

Ask yourself this- in the wild, does the fungus grow on live trees? Or only dead ones?

"Panellus stipticus is a saprobic species, and causes a white rot.[41] This is a form of wood decay in which the wood assumes a bleached appearance and where lignin as well as cellulose and hemicellulose is broken down by enzymes secreted by the fungus. Fruit bodies are usually found in tightly overlapping clusters on the sides of hardwood trees, on logs, stumps, and fallen branches. Although most commonly found on dead wood, it can also grow opportunistically in the wounds of living trees."

I was thinking of drilling out some holes for the plug spawn now, letting them kind of rot out until the weather warms up. So the tissue in the tree softens up a bit, then inoculating the plug spawn then.

Basically creating an "opportunistic wound" for the fungus.

Sounds valid. Might take a couple years to really get going.
Maybe you could do some logs along walkways and such too?

For temporary installation, like for a party, the stuff grows well on PF cakes.

Definitely document it here for future growers.

Alright! Holes are drilled. I made 10. Didn't want to go too overboard.

I made the holes slightly smaller then the plug spawn I'm planning on putting in there. In a month or so I'll check to see if they're holding up and if so I'll drill out to the exact diameter/depth of the plug and leave that to sit for 3-4 more months.

And that will be my next update!

I had a forgotten one make invitro fruits, but I didn't really try fruiting them.
I've read that it works to some extent but not very well.
