Modern poetry? Who/what are the hot poets?

My gf loves poetry. She's read all the classics, and im looking for some decent new poets, or even some older ones she may not know about. I can't say exactly what she prefers, but she like Langston Hughes, old stuff like Blake, and even some spoken word?? types like Tupacs poetry. I got her Serj's from SOAD poetry book last year.

Any recommendations would be sweet!

Hey could you send a link to Serjs poems?  I was big into SOAD when I was younger and it sounds interesting, thanks.
Im getting into poetry myself, right now im enjoying Thoreau, Whitman and Emily Dickinson.

Here is my favorite poem of all time by William Butler Yeats:

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

With any good poem you really have to read it over and over and concentrate on it deeply.  Tupac is the shit but he's not a poet in that sense, although his rapping is deep as shit in a different sort of way.

This is one huge surreal piece. Excellent writing though.



Sylvia Plath - Ariel
Ander Monson - Vacation Land (the word play is amazing in this)
Also, if you haven't check out Howl and Kaddish by Ginsberg (both long, great poems) and T.S. Eliot, if you haven't, he's my favorite.

Yeats (already mentioned :heart:) T.S. Eliot, W.H. Auden, E.A. Robinson, Roethke... They are giants.

I think you misunderstood me, i meant Serj's were meh. She knows all the classics, i was trying to find something she doesnt know....And Tupac did have some good poems, he wasnt a thug, thank corporate America for that. He was a lot smarter than ppl realized. Thanks for the poem though, i dont know much about peotry myself.

Saul Williams is an inspiration.. the only book I've read of his was "...Said the Shotgun to the Head", but I know he's got some other stuff out.

He also stars as a mad poet in the movie SLAM.

I'd recommend all of the above, as well as his various music albums (Amethyst Rock Star is my favorite)

As for my Thanksgiving, yeah it worked out great.. right now, not so much. But that's nobodies fault but my own! :wink:
