Some Kind of truffle?
    #13453584 -

Ok so i know truffles grow underground...  However i found these truffle like fungi...  The average size was about an inch in width, and about 1/2 inch tall by 1/2 inch from the side..

about 50% of the ones i found were covered in ants just standing about... I was able to find a few and broke them open in which they were like super rubbery foam... whilst 80% of them that were "mature" when touched, and puncturing the now extremely thin skin would melt into a light brown goo... upon smelling it, it didn't have a very pungent odor... but did have a smell when i held it right to my nose of like sweaty socks...

They were all found comming out of sand... near pine barrens... in Long island... Any Idea??  (description was brownish to black, with what looked like veins a couple dark brownish veins on the outside... heres a picture...

This was a 1/2 "ripe" specimen i found... The center of it was turning gooy, while the outside was still very rubbery...

Also i believe these are Amanita magniverrucata  could someone confirm...  i know these pics are awful from my blackberry... but i didnt want to tote my cannon out into the woods i wasn't familiar with...

Last one, i believe this is a "man on horseback" There were many in the area all pine trees, the caps were yellow sometimes with a grayish tinge to it, the stem and the gills were also a light yellow color.  Cant remember what the flesh looked like... I want to say it was also yellow inside...  Could anyone confirm??  Edible?

hehe i assure you its not, i found the "rubbery" one first... so i naturally thought the next one i found would be the same so i reached down to touch it and it instantlly melted to a poop color... which i then freaked out and was like EWWW i touched crap!!

Then i smelled it and it didnt smell anything like crap... anyways i just found a pic of something similar to it online... the pic on the left if almost Exactly what it looks like except the middle is not like what i found at all...

Rhizopogon sp., a basidiomycete

Oh, and as you see in the third pic on the right, the "cluster" they are more growing out of the ground then being dropped on the ground...

it's hard to tell from your pictures. the insides of truffles change color depending on maturity. have you researched truffles at mushroom expert.com or the like? it may be easier for you to compare since you don't have to depend on fuzzy photos.

I advise any noob looking to identify mushrooms to fill out the ID form and provide clear photographs. Knowledge is a privilege and deserves respect. Let's give due props to the experts!

I don't think that is "man on horseback". That has a yellow cap. Probably a different Tricholoma. Shots of the underside would help.

To think of it now that someone else mentioned it as well, its more probable that its some kind of puffball exactly because i didnt have to "dig" for it... Which i did try to do... however the only ones i found were all above ground. And yeah... something just said in my mind that it wasnt poop... even though it looked, and flowed like diarrhea after i poped it... that caused me to smell it...

However the "clear" pic i posted above (with the fungi on the left) being the exact copy of what it looked like, getting jet black with age. However the inside was more dark foam yellow then the white in the fungi on the right.

Yeah sorry i dont have better shots or shots of the underside of the other ones, i tried going through the Autoban book to try to identify them and after a while of not finding it i just gave up and threw the bag of them i had away.. Next time though...
