Pet snake.  Used snake bedding works like a charm.  Sprinkle that around the outside of your house and you won't have a mouse problem anymore.  If you're not wanting to keep a pet snake, pet stores would probably hold some for you when they clean the cages if you ask.

If you don't want to go the snake route, I know it sounds strange, but it does work...load some traps with cherry Starburst.  They like that better than peanut butter or cheese.

If you have to absolutely kill mice or rats dead:


Brodifacoum 0.005%

Waxed bait blocks for outdoors (you MUST use a bait station)

Small bait blocks or pellets (not treated grain) indoors.


Mice and rats often taste a test nibble of a new food to see if it is safe. With this poison at this concentration, that test nibble will kill them. Most rat/mouse poisons develop resistance against the poison, requires multiple feedings and allows for the development of bait shyness. Not this one, this kills them dead the first time out, and should one survive the test nibble the stuff stays in his body 1-4 months, ready to add to their next dose.

This poison and concentration is used by farmers to dispatch mice and rats by the wheelbarrow. One pound of this prepared product kills up to 25lbs of mice and 50lbs of rats. Worldwide its humanity's first line of defense against getting our grain crops eaten and shat on by mice and rats. As it is, 10% of all the worlds grain gets eaten by these cute pests.

As an added bonus its 100 times less toxic to cats than to rats, and the poisoning is very treatable by a vet.

If you don't own cats/dogs or got small kids, you can get brodifacoum 0.005% pellets which you can simply dump by the spoonful in every room of your house, especially near walls and doors, behind closets and couches. Check up on the bait points to see which ones get nibbled. With the ones that get nibbled you know two things: this is a mouse freeway and the critters who nibbled are dead mice walking. Mice usually follow the edge of the wall. You can recognize a very busy mice freeway by subtle brown/blackish smears on your paint or wallpaper. That's dirt rubbed off of their fur.

Near a mouse freeway look closely where they may enter your house. If theres a crevice 1/3 of an inch wide, mice can get in. You can plug those crevices with tin foil or better, plaster of paris made with half the required water to form a plaster putty. Before you do, of course do shove a spoon of bait in there. Don't forget the attic.

Brodifacoum 0.005% pellets or bait blocks are moisture resistant and out of direct sunlight will remain active for years. Just leave it lying there, if a new mouse scout happens to find a way in he'll find it, take a nibble and the invasion stops there. Don't be concerned mice will reject the bait once its old, musea have had problems with mice gnawing away at mummies.

I recommend not to use bait outdoors, that's a lost battle, but your indoor environment can be controlled. Outdoors, make your environment unwelcoming to mice, so no food/garbage lying around and preferably no bird feeding (which for the most part boils down to feeding your local rodent population anyway)

-make your home's surroundings uninviting to mice/rats
-prevent them from entering your home in the first place
-turn your home into a highly lethal environment by having several small portions of this bait in each room, against the wall, behind objects out of sight.

In the city you usually are offered only weaksauce baits, hit up a webshop that sells stuff for farmers. A small 1 lb tub is enough to safeguard a house attic to basement, a standard 2lb tub is often cheaper per ounce and will be useful for years to come.

A neighbor when the topic came on mice confessed "yes we had em up until a a couple of months ago but they went away by themselves." Since that was about the time I laid out my baits I have a fairly good idea where they might have gone :devil:

I like mice and rats in nature and as pets, but not as pests in my house :wink:

Next time you eat a cookie or sandwich, remember that the flour used to bake it contains a bit of mouse and rat piss and shit, and that this rodent scatologic content AND the price of your cookie is kept low by use of rodenticides, of which Brodifacoum 0.005% is the worldwide first choice.

Well my spring loaded trap hasnt gone off yet. and the poison bait looks half eaten. I have 3 cats, their just a bunch of pussies and cant protect the house right.


EDIT: People recognize the difference between mice and chipmunks.
mice - eating my dogs food. (no wonder why when we feed her she eats all of it really quickly) chew through your house wires and mass breed

chipmunks - eat nuts and live in their own homes

what's the toxic potential in a house pet that eats a rodent gorged on
this stuff, unlikely they'd have more than a nibble or two but my only
concern is always that it could prove fatal in some way to other
critters, I know that many of the rat pellets also look almost exactly
like the alfalfa pellets i give the goat occasionally... solid bait
would be my choice based on that

Hell no i aint getting a tiger lol. I just watched that fatal attractions tv show. This chick was dragged into the barn her tiger was staying in and guarded her from police. She died too i dont wanna get into it.

Get a cat, my last cat was a mouse champion. Would play with them until they died. Never actually eat them. We had quite a mouse problem, then never again.

I actually put my cat cinnamon outside and she just meowed at me and ran back in. The only cat that goes outside is our oldest one and she fights with the dog.

Secondary poisoning that's a toughie. Cats are about 100x less sensitive than rats in mcg/kg body weight so a cat would have to eat his own weight in mice who ate 100 lethal doses each for the same lethality. A catwho catches the occasional mouse shouldnt be at risk. Dogs are MUCH more sensitive though, some are 10x less sensitive than rats but other breeds are just as sensitive, on a mcg/kg basis, but dogs tend to not eat rodents.

Big problem would be predatory birds which are quite sensitive an have an all-rodent diet, and for them I recommend against using this stuff outdoors.

A goat munching away on pellets is a darwin award waiting to happen of course, in addition to that the meat and the milk will be polluted as brodifacoum is very persistent in fatty tissues - it stays active in the body 1-4 months.

For outdoor use generally Bromadiolone 0.005% or Difenacoum 0.005% is used which are less lethal and less persistent.

Its best to keep this kind of stuff indoors though, and not to use any if theres pets/kids around.
