Is N2O dangerous?
    #13313284 -

I've heard conflicting stories about this, and I'm not sure who to believe.

I've never done N2O, except once when I was having my wisdom teeth out ... and the first thing I wrote on their pad when I woke up was "more N2O?"
(Actually I probably wrote "NO2" like a dumbass.)

Anyway, it's a drug I'm curious about, although my understanding is that it's more "just for fun" than drugs like cannabis or mushrooms, which I see as having real "personal growth" potential.

I've heard that N2O is neurotoxic, I've heard that it's harmless.
Who do I believe?
Shroomery, please weigh in. :strokebeard:

N2O is pretty benign. It's kind of like crack though in the sense that it doesn't last long at all and when it's over you just want to do it again and again!

Just make sure while doing it you leave space to actually breathe oxygen in between hits.

It's probably not a good idea to do culinary grade habitually. But if you buy a cracker and a 10 pack of culinary chargers every once in a while you're fine.

It is harmless, and you are completely wrong about it being "just for fun". I watched a man shed tears about a realization he had on nitrous.

It is so god damn amazing. It really IS super fun, but it's also extremely trippy. It's the perfect mix with psychedelics and cannabis.

It is constantly wrestling with cannabis and mushrooms in my mind as my favorite drug.

more accurate information about N20:

1.) the substance is only harmless when used in low dosages, also in combination with oxygen inhaled.

2.) recreationally using nitrous does kill brain cells

3.) most of the nitrous you get at parties or on the lot is NOT medical grade, i repeat it is CULINARY grade. what difference does this make in terms of health? no one is really sure.....but try an expiriment if you ever get the chance, take a hit of medi grade nas and then a hit of cul. grade.....the difference will not only blow you away but disgust you as well. culinary grade literally feels like your brain is dying.

4.) the normal way of inhaling nitrous is to take hit, hold, no oxygen, let out, next hit, so on and so forth, with little to no oxygen reuptke.....this DOES kill braincells.

5.) if you just stick the balloon in your mouth and take small "sips" while breathing in air you can massively reduce the harm, and as well this method will extend your balloon substantially. you won't "blast off" or get as high though

6.) nitrous from whippits or cannisters is potentially life threatening NEVER ATTEMPT

^^^all of this aside
N2O is fun while it lasts. ENJOY. perhaps the most breathetaking experiences ive ever had were under the influence of N2O, no fucking joke, this shit gets you HIGH AS FUCK

im pretty well done with this substance though, over time it didn't just lose its magic, but it started to give me headaches and rarely can you find medi grade....just stopped feeling good, the feeling is far too fleeting imo, and also it can funk up an already good high and "nitro-fy" it so to speak, totally co-opting the effects of previous drug for infinite "wawawwawawawawaw"

So you're saying basically that holding your breath kills braincells.

That has nothing to do with nitrous. Chemically it isn't dangerous and it will only harm you if you are irresponsible with it.

Re: Is N2O dangerous? [Re: AntiEverything]

not necessarily

nitrous oxide speeds up the depletion of oxygen in your bloodstream
thusly you get the "blue lips"
blue lips mean brain cell loss

taking a single hit and holding it in for 15 seconds, then doing another blast the same size could potentially be enough to kill braincells

a single blast probably isn't going to hurt you

but repeated dosage definately will

the thing is that yes the drug in and of itself essentially impossible to overdose, harmless when used right (in a medical setting), etc....my point is that the way you (usually) recreationally intake nitro is very dangerous

It isn't very dangerous. Heroin is very dangerous. Meth is very dangerous. Nitrous has some slight drawbacks, but I am none the worse for wear from doing it.

depends on how technical you want to get

pharm grade heroin wouldn't be that bad for you

pharm grade nitrous, also, not that bad for you.

street grade or culinary grade of either drug? potentially harmful

if you don't do too much of it, you honestly have nothing to worry about, to claim it doesn't kill braincells imo is misinformed and also to say that its "not" dangerous is as well.

ive seen people that have abused nitrous for years and they seem literally retarded, they slur their speech and can HARDLY form sentences

yet they keep on suckin down that nitro

There is a difference between occasionally binging on it and going full blown addiction with it. Of course it's going to fuck you up after years of excessive use. Nitrous isn't a drug that you use every day, or even every week.

I still love the shit out of it.

Moderation is key with everything.

That's like saying Adderall is safe because kids are prescribed it.

Anyways, I think as long as you're taking B vitamins when you binge on it you should be fine. That and not depriving yourself of oxygen.

when you dive too deep, the weird shit is caused by n20.  'Nitrogen narcosis' or rapture of the deep.  A friend of mine who was a navy seal said he went to 300 ft and they switched him onto regular air, and he had to pick up a shackle and buckle it in front of an insturctor, he said it was so fucking hard because he was tripping from all the N2O. :tongue2:  I don't think the Navy would qualify divers like that if it was harmful.

Nitrous apparently accumulates in your body long-term, and abusing it can be dangerous. See:

nah thats caused by N2, the gas that makes up 70% of the earths atmosphere. totally inert to us at normal pressure but stupifying when forced to diffuse into your body by high atmospheric pressure.
really interesting effect though

Man! I love nitrous. I haven't done it since I was like 18. That tinny WAH WAH WAH like some crazy dubstep. All choppy...

I'm gonna write "do nitrous again" on my list.

irresponsible is such a vague word it reduces the warning to semantics.  Obviously harming yourself is irresponsible by definition, and that's what he needs information regarding

One thing to be concerned with nitrous from my recollection is that with constant administration you don't generally deliver a high enough concentration to have a marked anaesthetic effect unless the concentration of nitrous to air is above that which would induce a hypoxic state.  The implications of this to recreational use, especially non-continuous use, is not something I'm aware of.  I would imagine the recreational use generally should not produce anaesthetic concentrations, but I don't know.  (of course people don't die from using this stuff reasonably either, so that's always a thing to keep in mind when interpreting things like this)

The only other caution I know of not mentioned here is the fact that in anaesthetic application, the termination of nitrous/oxygen mixture delivery can often induce hypoxia due to the nitrous displacing room air as it difuses out of the blood, so it is recomended that oxygen alone follow termination of the N2O:O2 mix.  Once again, I have no idea of the implications for recreational use.

Personally, I imagine that there's nothing to worry about provided you
a) don't set up a system that requires active intervention to deliver room air- if you pass out this will likely kill you
b) don't use continuously-administered nitrous and take a breather between bouts
c) consider the drop in temperature that accompanies an expanding volume of gas and don't fuck up your pipes w/ frosty gas
d) don't put a condom over your head and release nitrous into the condom while your boyfriend screws you in the ass.  You'll probably die.  (seriously, this made shroomery news in the past)

Anyways, why isn't this in chem and pharmacology or ODD  Seems that is where this thread should go... :poke:

It is indeed caused by nitrous and many other gasses, which is why deep divers use more exotic mixes than straight air or O2:air mixes ( I believe high MW noble gasses to displace some of the N2)

As for whether or not the navy would qualify divers if it was harmful- um... yes?  People die all the time in retarded military training excercises that seem more focused on machismo than practical application et cet.  That said, other than decompression, I imagine the only problem with this practice would be the psychotropic effects and their ramifications: running out of oxygen, getting lost, taking off your mask, et cet  With some guy right there who can haul your ass up and provide O2 if you act a fool, I imagine its not a big deal

But fostaar is right in saying this is likely N2 narcosis.  I cannot imagine they'd give you N2O- what would be the point?
