Interesting topic, as I had never really heard of these guys until a few days ago, when they called me to verify the residence of one of my tenants who are applying for an account with them.  These tenants have had notorious financial troubles, and have made an honest effort to keep up with their payments but are still perpetually 2 - 4 weeks late on the monthly rent.  It's only because the main guy on the lease has been renting from my family for over a decade that I offer them such leniency, and I was admittedly a little confused as to why they would be trying to setup an account with Rent a Center when they can hardly make rent.

Then I remembered them telling me that they had to sell their computer to help make their rent a month or two ago, so it seems pretty reasonable they are probably using Rent a Center to get another computer in the house with minimal initial expense... hoping that their employment situation will be improving while they use the Rent a Center service in the meanwhile to maintain computer connectivity in the house (which is practically necessary these days).

In all, I can see the niche they fill... though I agree that people who use their service are probably misguided and more often than not, making a poor decision.  But if you're broke and have a job lined up with the knowledge that you will be receiving better hours in the coming weeks or months, I suppose it's not the worst idea to use Rent a Center to fulfill your immediate needs while you grind away the wait toward financial security?

To be honest, I'd use Rent a Center if I was hosting a Superbowl party and needed a huge tv for a few days. I could rent one for 20-30 bucks for a week... My friend did that last year and it was epic. He asked everyone to chip in a few bucks and it covered his cost for a 60" Samsung.

But it's like living in a hotel or using a rental car as your primary vehicle. It will cost you 3-5x the amount it's worth by the time it's all said and done.

When i had a kid at 17, and moved out to support him.  I used a rent a center like place to get a washer and dryer.  I was barely able to get by with the money I had, and the time/effort/even more wasted money it took to go to the laundromat that was quite a ways from where I stayed seemed like a worse Idea than rent to own...it was only like $42 for 12 months, so not bad, they are cheapo washer and dryers, and I probably paid like 20% over cost for them...that was like 10 years or so ago now, and never had to use them since, am in a much better place in life in fact.  Though, I still have that same washer and dryer, those cheap ass no brand mofos have run for a long ass time!

does it, convenience, if he gets something, doesnt like it, it goes back

I didn't know LDS and Geo were both landlords.  Pretty cool.  Anyway Geo, your computer idea still doesn't make sense because I got a brand new Dell recently and the payments are a minimum of $15 per month.  Although I'm not sure if they did a credit check on me.  That could be a problem for people.  Pris, the guy you know who has the luxury of taking back something if he doesn't like it is paying dearly for the luxury.  So it just isn't smart at all.  And now a days with the bed bug scare, why would you want to keep getting used furniture. 

The most reasonable idea that you guys mentioned was the TV.  I guess I could see pitching in for a big TV for the Super Bowl.  But everything else just doesn't hold water.

I rented this HUGE ass stereo once to throw a woods (forest party). Hook up a generator.. was sooooo sick.
