Peru coca growers paralyze power plant

LIMA, Peru — Hundreds of coca growers in Peru have seized control of a thermoelectric plant in the country's interior, cutting off electricity to the estimated 430,000 people who live in Ucayali province.

The provincial governor and the plant's director of operations reported Sunday's takeover of the facility at Aguaytia in interviews with the radio station Radioprogramas.

The growers also have blocked a main highway by disabling dozens of buses and trucks.

The so-called "cocaleros" have been protesting for more than a week against government eradication of their crop, which is the base for making cocaine. Peru is the world's No. 2 coca producer after Colombia.

Coca has been a way of life for thousands of years there. Its not going away. It will persist past whatever toxic roundup sprays, genetically engineered blights, or political backhands the US govt serves up.

Good for them! I hope they kill lots of prohibitionists. They probably will.

September 20, 2010 - Associated Press

LIMA, Peru — Hundreds of coca growers briefly seized control of a power plant in Peru's interior Sunday, cutting off electricity to the estimated 430,000 people who live in Ucayali province.

Police later moved in, arresting 120 people and freeing 30 employees who got the power on again at the natural gas-fired power plant in Aguaytia, a city about 300 miles (490 kilometers) northeast of Lima.

But authorities said Sunday that coca growers were still blocking a main highway with dozens of disabled buses and trucks.

The so-called "cocaleros" have been protesting for more than a week against government eradication of their crop, which is the base for making cocaine. Peru is the world's No. 2 coca producer after Colombia.

Hey, Peruvian government! How 'bout helping them transition to another crop to rely on for their livelihood, instead of blanket illegalizing it and destroying a substantial portion of the local economy?

Pure would probably legalize or drastically alter a lot of prohibition issues.  The US government trumps all.
