18 gauge core biopsy guns.
    #1308991 - 02/14/03 10:26 PM (21 years, 13 days ago)

If you can get your hands on one of these puppies? They work GREAT for taking clone tissue samples.

In core biopsy the typical needle size is 18 Gauge - 14 Gauge (about 1.2 mm - 2.2 mm). In core biopsy the sample is taken by a biopsy instrument, which is often called a "biopsy gun".

In core biopsy the needle of the biopsy instrument is manually inserted, and the sample is taken by "firing" the spring-loaded instrument. When the biopsy gun is discharged, the needle core rapidly advances a distance called the stroke length, which is typically 15 or 22 mm.

Immediately behind the core comes the outer cylinder of the needle to cover the acquired sample (1 inch long by 1/32 of an inch in diameter). You then retract the needle & pull back the cannula thumb tad (until it locks in place), exposing the tissue sample & removing it.

Or, alternativly - inserting the needle through a resealing injection port of a small sterile container bottle or slant containing agar. Then, retract the canula & shake the sample out -- onto the agar meduim, then withdraw the needle, back out - through the port (which reseals - as the needle is withdrawn.

That looks great, but it appears to be a sterile pack one use item. Is it autoclavable?

This one is not. The 5 inch long needle is fixed to the grip. But the needle has a sheath. A 2 minute soak in alc & resheathed & nada problemo - yet. I have some others, on the way, that the needle can be removed from & autoclaved.

Piercing needles are designed to do the same thing, though you'll need another needle or small diameter wire to push the core out. You can buy stainless piercing needles online for a few bucks, but the gun I'm sure is better.

After reading this thread i just did some experiments with a large needle on a syringe half filled with distilled water .I tryed sticking it into centeral flesh and sucking a little into the needle as i pushed it in.Then push the plunger a tiny amount to push water throught the needle pushing out a little white core onto PDA + P  so thanks to the clever raccoon  but i think ill still get that gun  better chat up a nurse

I find the best way to get free stuff from the hospital is to walk in and grab all the shit you can when nobody's looking.
