Can someone help me with Windows Vista?

Hey guys, so I've been trying to move my laptop from Windows Vista to Windows XP which seems not to be the easiest thing to do.

I got the laptop back in 2007 right when Vista had come out, and honestly it doesn't have the specs to run vista. I'm trying to minimize the used memory so I can get as much speed out of my computer as possible (I'm using it for production).

I have a Windows XP Home Edition and Professional disc, and I have gone online and downloaded the necessary drivers for my laptops hardware to be compatible with the OS.

I'll run through what I ty to do to explain the problem I'm getting.

-I download all necessary drivers and unzip them to a thumb drive and insert the OS CD
-Reboot the computer to Boot manager and run from CD
-It runs through the beginning of the setup, preparing to open the wizard

Now here's where I run into the problem.
When it begins opening the installation wizard it gives the option to press F6 in order to install any necessary drivers.

So I press F6, and I then proceed to insert the thumb drive, but it never recognizes that the thumb drive is inserted.
From this point, it notifies me that windows was not able to correctly identify some devices, and if I had some form of drivers to install then to press a particular key.

I try pressing this key, and it says windows detected no drivers available to install.

So from here I press continue and it attempts to keep opening the wizard but eventually aborts the setup because of an error with compatibility.

I'm going to try using a different (older) thumb drive this next time, and I will be sure to write down the specific error codes that I am given.

Don't press F6 during the windows XP setup.
First completely install windows XP then after you boot
into windows you install the drivers from that thumb drive.

See it won't find them on the thumb drive because the drivers you downloaded for you laptop are made to be installed through windows OS, not during the windows setup.

Hope this helps a little.

And this will be an easier transition if you have another computer with internet access to use.

Wait, but what if when windows XP is initially installed neither my monitor, keyboard, or mouse don't work. How will I install the drivers then? Could I possibly reboot to boot manager, and then boot from USB?

i got little lost there (sorry im stoned) :smirk:

but if im understanding correctly: you are trying to install windows on your laptop with the drivers on a thumbdrive that it isn't recognizing?

this would be because you need to install the drivers once windows is installed. just did this on my laptop. install windows, then at your desktop you can then use your thumbdrive and install..

if the case is you are getting an error trying to continue the setup regardless then im not too sure. what did the error say?

your keyboard and usb ports will all work, your computer specific drivers will apply to things like changing your resolution or listening to audio...

F6 is for raid drivers.  Ignore it.  Your monitor will work fine, just very basically in low resolution until you install the drivers.  Get windows on first.  Then do drivers.

Windows will install generic drivers for monitor, keyboard, mouse, video card, network card... etc. Then you just update those generic drivers to the drivers you got on your thumb drive.

Trust me, that laptop is windows compatible so that means all the generic drivers will work well enough for you to get into windows and update them.

Download Win7 off a torrent site.  Problems will be solved.  Then turn off UAC, cuz no one seems to.  :frown:

Okay, so I did what you guys told me to do.
I never inserted the thumb drive, and I never pressed F6. I just ran the cd and let it do its thing, but I am still getting this same error message:


Should I just reformat Vista first to remove any possible malware causing this issue, and then switch to XP? :confused:

When you load XP it's formatting your HDD first..  If you're still getting into Vista you're doing something wrong.

Agreed, you need to delete the partition that's holding windows vista first off, then create a new partition, then format the new partition. All that can be done in the windows setup.

Go slowly through the setup and read everything, it'll tell you how to delete the partition. (you'll lose everything off that partition when its deleted)

It encounters this error before it reaches the point in which I can delete the other partition. That is why I am still able to get on the same computer (but I do have another available computer with internet)

IDK, windows Vista was running slowly on his machine,
vista and windows 7 have about the same system requirements.

He wants more speed out of his PC, downgrading windows
versions will defiantly accomplish this.

Not yet. Just woke up.

I'm gonna try formatting Vista and then try installing XP. Hopefully that fixes the error.

Windows 7 runs beautifully on older machines.  It was designed with netbooks in mind, and it seems to manage system resources quite well.

I'm just going by experience, I installed it on my older PC, single core 1.5ghz and it ran a LOT slower than Windows XP on the same system.

But that's the only computer I've tried it on so its a really isolated experiment of course.
