I live in Vancouver which is adjacent north to portland, yet I have only been to Portland a few times. The town has a lot to offer, a ton of stuff to do, you just have to ask around.

Really cheap heroin in Portland and a bunch of angry street kids looking to rob you for money for their heroin.

OP - What are you into, and where are you staying? The Japanese Garden is a must see for some, costs $9.50 to get in. There are of course a ton of good bars, but one I really like is Henry's on 11th and Burnside (west side of river). Another cool spot is the Jupiter Hotel on Burnside and approx 9th, a groovy retro kinda place on ther East side of the river.

Really, there are a ton of little neighborhoods that are cool, like  Hawthorn up around 20th (east side). Obviously a lot of folks just head right for Pioneer square, which is in the true downtown are and in the middle of "fairless square", where the Max train is free.

But anyway, depending on your age/location and fiscal capacity I could probably think of some other things. I mean, you could score junk like just about anywhere, pick up a skanky hooker on 82nd or upper W Burnside, and so on. The river walk on westside is not a bad place to start either if you just want to walk and take in the town for free.
