Spider mite war
    #13020645 -

In the past I've dealt with spider mites with neem or insecticidal soap with no problems. However, I have a HORRIBLE infestation right now and those things don't seem to be working due to the sheer numbers.

I've been bringing things inside to spray with multiple rounds of neem but its gotten pretty bad. One of the infested is my favorite clematis vine. The nursery I work it is also having a huge problem with spider mites and I fear I may be introducing more from my work.

Before I go crazy with Bayer 3 in 1, are there any other organic insecticides you guys have used? Specifically with luck controlling spider mites? I want to avoid using toxic chemical sprays but I will not allow my clematis to die. Its the one in my avatar.

Anyone?

I think I've read about using pulverized cayenne pepper and black pepper to get rid of them.

Thank you, I will try that out.

I just spent an hour thoroughly wiping down each leaf and the stems with rubbing alcohol and cotton balls. After it dried I did a second round of neem oil but now I'm almost out.

I'll try the peppers, but I might buy some more Neem and some Bayer 3 in 1 as an emergency pesticide.

the fact that they are outdoor plants might make it a bit harder. I just recently delt with my very first spider mite infestation and I found a product that works great if you have your plants indoors in a non-ventilated area.

The product is Hot shot no pest strips. Place these strips in a room with the plants that get no ventillation and them bitches will be gone. I kept mine in for a week to make sure to get any new eggs that hatch and so far so good.

I do want to exercise a word of caution with this product. This product emits a highly toxic gas that has no smell. So please use your brain when using the product. Wash your hands after touching it and make sure to seal off the room the best you can. In the directions it says you can be around this at a max of 4 hours a day. My grow room is actually adjacent to my bedroom so when I used these I just slept down in the living room. I don't even like to take chances with that crap.

I know it's not organic, but it will get rid of them and for good.

Also try to stay away from using the same product more than 3 times in a row. Mites can build resistance to certain products pretty quickly. So my advice is neem, an organice method, fox farms don't bug me and the hot shot no pest strips.

and alternate between them so you don't breed a super mite that is resistant to anything you throw at them.

Heh yeah I definitely want to avoid that.

I might just get the Bayer 3 in 1 because it has a strong miticide in it. One of my co workers used to be a grower and said the chemical in it is the only one that would work when he had bad problems.

I would buy shitloads of predatory mites and release them.

I really like that vine.

I bought some Spinosad containing product and will try that. I'm buying some Bayer 3 in 1 just in case and if the spinosad works I'll just save the Bayer for an emergency.

Spinosad is an organic insecticide that is a bacteria that attacks and kills insects.

Right on, hope the organic method works out :goodluck:

Azamax is pretty good and it's very safe from what I've read.... I recently tried some on my minor spider mite problem and it worked great, haven't seen a single one yet.. I'm still going to spray again in 7 days though so I make sure I kill two life cycles in a row as recommended...

I haven't heard of it. I'll look into it, thank you. I'm going to have an arsenal of organic pesticides pretty soon. Haha

Good luck with the infestation.  I recently accepted a plant from a friend that has spider mites on it which is well separated from other plants.  Getting close to the plant to inspect/spray/water makes me feel like in a horror movie where a character willingly walks into a creepy deathtrap.  He was using azamax as well as a couple other products but hasn't had much luck.  You could try taking some cuttings after spraying/washing plants off thoroughly to see if you can propagate pest-free backups.

hehe, well to tell the truth I mixed a little "death cocktail" for the little bastards... I HATE Spider mites from the very depths of my being so I don't mess around.... You don't want to mess up your plants though so I like to use a half strength dose of Floramite (10 drops) (harsh insecticide and WILL mess up plants at around the 15-25 drop level or so) and I mixed that with a heavy dose of the Azamax because I read through the whole instruction booklet and it can actually be used as a systemic by doing a soil drench as well and any product that you can give the roots isn't going to be too harsh, so I used a bunch of that... 12/ml per quart or so... and a TINY drop of hand soap and a tiny drop of dish soap to break the surface tension of the water and make everything coat better... and since this is in my indoor room I turned off all the fans for a bit so the stuff didn't dry right away.

Yeah I have also read that neem can be used as a systemic soil drench and tried it this season with mixed results against thrips (azamax is neem-based, though I think it's an extract).  I mix my neem with a wetting agent...I have some coco wetting agent at the moment.  It does seem more effective when it can effectively coat the surfaces of the plant and I like that it doesn't bead up quite as much.

If I had an indoor spider mite outbreak my two most probably options would be:
1) Destroy plants
2) Alternate between homemade organic pesticides and neem/potassium salts of fatty acids/pyrethrin 3-in-1 spray and rinsing all parts of the plant with water occasionally too.  This always gets done in the evening so as not to burn the plants.

Sometimes it's better to just scrap the plants imo rather than risk further contamination, especially when it's hard to schedule in enough time to constantly be attacking the pests on all fronts.
