I know Jerry Garcia is probably the better clean player and therefore the better player but I still prefer David Gilmour.

First off like any good head I love Floyd but between the two Jerry Garcia FTW and here's why:

1.  Jerry's emotional content. He gave 100% emotion to every song he played.  Often, Gilmour just looks un-interested in what he's playing.

2.  Jerry played on the edge and wasn't afraid to take chances.  Was his intonation always perfect, no.  Did the train come off the proverbial tracks sometimes, yes.  That being said, if you don't push yourself why are you playing.  Gilmour's playing is just a little too perfect.

3.  Soul, I guess if you add 1 to 2 you get three which is what soul is in a guitar player.  Gilmour's playing while technically flawless, lacks soul.

I love both, but I disagree that gilmour seemed uninterested.

He might not play a ton of notes, but the ones he does play are always pretty much perfect. He's very selective.

Being someone who was first an AVID Pink Floyd fan (license plates "UMAGUMA" for a few years), and then became an AVID Deadhead (Plates say "A HEAD" lol) - this is really tough for me.


SO I'll just say this:
-Gilmour is better at playing that solo he composed & plays every time
-Garcia is better at playing that solo he doesn't know he's playing.

I do appreciate what Jerry did for the scene, and if it weren't for the Grateful Dead we probably wouldn't have the sort of functional glass art we have now. Born in the lots.

Musically, and personally, I'll go with Gilmour anyday.

Floyd is definitely amazing, but their music is somewhat simplistic.  I guess that's where their beauty lies...

If I wanted to learn to play a Floyd song on the guitar, I could do it without much problem in a few hours.  There's no way in hell I'd be able to keep up with the Dead though. 


As for being psychedelic, well, they're both awesome on a few good hits, but on my first 10-strip experience, I tried listening to Floyd and almost shat myself.  Their music can be quite terrifying.  The Grateful Dead, on the other hand, can bring me back to euphoria from even the darkest trips.  They take me to space.


I'm gonna have to go with Garcia on this one.
