Volunteering for Oil Spill Relief

I'm really upset as i look at more and more pictures of this oil spill and how its affecting the wildlife there. I hate feeling helpless in this situation and i really wanna donate some time to it.

Does anyone know of  any good organizations to volunteer for regarding this oil spill? I'm looking it up now but it seems like you have to be trained in wildlife rescue to do it. I'm just a regular old girl with no experience in this stuff. Am I really useless in this situation?

650,000 volunteers needed from the 4 States affected by Gulf Oil spill.
Defense scientists and international engineers can get rid of all the oil in 6 weeks. Federal and State Governments are not helping but local people can save their coast not salvage it. All the oil can be transferred to a tanker off the ocean in 6 weeks. Affected beaches and animals can be cleaned safely. All the oil coming up from the  leaking well will be taken away before it gets near the coast. Science and engineering and local people can save the coast together. We need pickup truck drivers, fishermen, marine engineers, truck drivers, coastal walkers, amateur weather people, surfers, divers, volunteer boat crews and many more needed. Anyone know if Common Ground are co-ordinating any volunteer efforts with the spill?

My friends had experience volunteering with them during Katrina and had nothing but good things to say...

If you are able to go help clean the gulf, by all means that is awesome and I commend you, but be careful around that stuff:

Trained experts are down there giving up because they know any attempt to clean it up is useless. You can't do anything but make the surface look better. You can clean oil from the animals but 90% of the time the animal dies despite it being scrubbed clean. There really isn't jack shit anyone can do. They could try harder to stop the oil from gushing out of the well. That would help.

"Studies are indicating that rescue and cleaning of oiled birds makes no effective contribution to conservation, except conceivably for species with a small world population," the U.S. Minerals Management Service said in a 2002 environmental analysis of proposed Gulf oil drilling projects. "A growing number of studies indicate that current rehabilitation techniques are not effective in returning healthy birds to the wild."

Fewer than 10 percent of brown pelicans that were cleaned and marked for tracing after a 1990 spill in Southern California were accounted for two years later, while more than half the pelicans in a control group could be found, three scientists with the University of California, Davis, reported in a paper published in 1996. The formerly oiled birds also showed no signs of breeding.

my brother is working on a ship off the coast of Louisiana right now cleaning up oil.

he has been doing it nonstop for almost 3 months.. he works about 85 hours a week. the ship operates 24/7.

he said they arent even making a dent. every once and a while he sees a clear patch of ocean but 99% of the time they are sailing on oil.

i believe that most companies are waiting until the spill is stopped before sending people to clean it up. payroll has got to be insanely high.

my bro will probably make between $40-$50k this year with this job and he doesnt have any expenses. they pay for his food, housing, laundry, etc..

Ani, I wouldn't bother trying to volunteer right now. It's a MAJOR cluster fuck with very little organization. I understand your desire to help, god knows I think about it daily, but it's just not going well right now. I hat eto even voice the words, but I think the entire gulf is going to be devastated completely by this. There's up to just over 120 million gallons of oil and counting and it's still not capped. This place will not be the same for at least 2 generations, if ever. While I would love you being down here, I just don't think it's good idea. A very nobel, caring idea, but fruitless at this point. I hate to be so pessimistic about it, but if you saw what I saw yeasterday, you would lose all optimism, too. It is FUCKED UP here!:sad:

I received this in my student email:  (not sure if it's limited to grad students or not but it looks cool!)

NOAA is seeking observers to serve on the vessel monitoring
dispersant use at the Deepwater Horizon wellhead. Cruises last
approximately 10 days and transit to the Deepwater Horizon site from
ports near Port Fourchon in Louisiana.  Individuals from NOAA
cooperative institutes including graduate students are eligible to
serve as observers and funds are available to pay observers'
salaries.  The next cruise is schedule to depart on Thursday, June 10
and additional opportunities are expected to be available throughout
the summer.
