Would a mod sticky this?

I'd encourage anyone who can donate or volunteer to do so. There's been lots of debate on here lately about Hurricane Katrina and if you're really concerned then help out all you can!

Please do not donate to the redcross. Ive seen the giant joke of what they did in their efforts of help. Donate to the Salvation army instead.

Last hurricane i was in and the red cross came to help they had coffee and it was a august 98 degrees out. Salvation army set up outposts had food and water and batteries.

I can not stress enough to not donate to the red cross. Your money will be wasted.

(Jackson, Miss.) September 1, 2005 - Mississippians and people across the world are asking about how to volunteer to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.
PROFESSIONAL SEARCH AND RESCUE VOLUNTEERS

Professional search and rescue volunteers must contact MEMA Search and Rescue Support at 601-360-0937 to receive credentials allowing them to pass roadblocks.

PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL VOLUNTEERS

Please contact the following:

Nurses:
Miss. State Board of Nursing
Delia Owens
601-497-8022

Physicians and EMT?s
Miss. State Board of Health
601-576-8085

NON-PROFESSIONAL VOLUNTEERS

At this time we are working to improve access into affected areas, and establish food, water, shelter and sanitation. Once that is completed, we will be able to deploy volunteers.

Please contact volunteer organizations such as your local Red Cross, Salvation Army and local churches. The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) group will work with these organizations to coordinate volunteer manpower.

Once it is safe, hopefully in the next few days, we will have a reserve of volunteers that we can put to best use.

I completely agree.

American Red Cross are crooks.

International Red Cross/Red Cressant is slightly better.
If you live in the affected area, donate some blood if you can't donate money. That's a real good way of helping.

I sent a check to the Red Cross one time (9/11) and after 3 months they didn't cash it, so I cancelled it.

I don't trust them, they don't need my money, doen't the goverment have BILLIONS AND BILLIONS of dollars?

:shake: use a different charity then.  The gov. isn't the ones in need, it's the people stranded in NO with no homes food or water.  If you don't want to help that's fine.  Sorry Red Cross didn't cash your check.

Another thing people can do who want to help is to weed through their closets and pull out some clothes that don;t fit or whatever and get them to a local church collecting donations to be shipped to those in need right now. So many had their homes demolished and are getting out with just the clothes are their backs.

If you live in or around the houston area and you want to donate some of your time at the astrodome
Simply go down main st. and all Volunteers are meeting up at the *yellow lot* all throughout the day.
I did call and find out they *really* need medical volunteers the graveyard shift

good job Cowgold, without question you went the "extra mile" with this post. It's very apparent you took alot of time researching and organizing the information.

THANK YOU Cowgold

If anyone is getting together a box of old clothes to bring to a local church or group organising to bring it in to the zone, also consider canned food, an old can opener, old blankets, flash lights with batteries. Beleive me it will all get put to use by people who will be very greatful and humbled by your charity.

i just wanted to say thanks to every one that has helped in this time of need. i live in BR so we made out ok, but the number of homeless jobless families that i now know is humbling. it has been fantastic however to see the local response and how the people of this state pulled together while waiting on the feds to show up. it looks like we are half way out of the woods but there are still alot of people in harms way here in remote locations. remember, there are lots of ways to help if you can. shelters are going to need volenteer, people are going to need clothes, jobs, homes, etc... thanks again and lets all see if we can right what has happened to our city and country.
