Why do people brag about being poor?

Lately Ive seen a bunch of "youre probably just a rich white kid blah blah blah". Not directed towards me, but I see it. Then comes the "my family was poor growing up blah blah blah Im hard core". This got me thinking. Id be proud as fuck to be a rich white kid. Odds are if you were poor growing up and went to a public school...youre probably a drop out lazy fucking idiot with no job. Its not like rich white kids live a sheltered protected life and have no idea what the hell is going on with the world. They have every educational advantage as the next guy...maybe even more.

Just because you had to struggle growing up because of your broke ass parents and you got made fun of for being poor and you think youre "street smart" doesnt actually give you any advantage at all. If anything youre at a dis-advantage.

Speak for yourself man... Those of us who grew up shitty, poor, not with a silver spoon in our mouth are the ones making it.  Where as all my friends (rich white kids with mommy and daddy handing them everything) fuck everything up and have nothing to show for anything other then failure.  Street smart is a HUGE advantage more then a disadvantage - you get hustled and conned less, you know whos a shady fuck to stay away from...

Besides - now your sterotyping... Why cant i have street and book smarts?  Not only can i slang dope - but i can tell you the ratios its cut to, percentages of profit margin and weigh risks over gain. 

Street smarts is book smarts but with practicality behind it.  Its taking 2 plus 2 into if you have this many apples and you get this many more, how many do you have?

A person can still be an annoying piece of shit whether he's rich, poor, average, black, asian, white, catholic, atheist, etc.
A decent, down to earth, person can be rich, poor, average, black, asian, white, catholic, atheist, etc.

Assholes and non-assholes can come in any form.
A rich kid can also steal your cd's if he wanted to.

But sometimes it does seem like rich politicians and their privileged offspring are running this world, and most of them are corrupt, not very intelligent, not aware of people other than themselves, and most probably don't have to do much to get what they want, but that's probably a stereotype...

I never said shit about running the world... i said making it.  And i also said speak for yourself.  You have your story, i have mine.  I grew up with shit parents and no money - have my own crib, car, and money to take girls out on dates and shit where as my friend who was accepted to the best school in the state and all this, has dropped out, then got kicked out of the next school and is back living with mommy and daddy.

Everything is in the eye of the beholder... who cares if the nurse is saving me cause i got stabbed on a deal gone bad, or because a junkie needed money for his fix, or because i fell on the knife.  That was that persons intentions on becomming a nurse.  TO save the life of any person that comes into the hospital reguardless of cause or reason.

Just like you dont see why people brag about being poor, why brag about being rich.  Like i said - the rich kids here arent and cant do shit.  My 4 year old cousin could punk the rich kids, and then they buy bunk ass shit thinking its the bomb.  Also know where the drug problems are?  Not the poor schools... rich school.  Heroin is a huge issue at the rich schools... kids killin eachother for that shit.  Poor school - we just met in the sewers and smoked pot...

If you grew up poor and disadvantaged, and then made it, there may be an argument that you overcame greater adversity and obstacles.

If the only advantage you can cite is knowing how to sell and buy drugs, then I see no reason to brag about being poor.  Moving drugs as a living is a pretty shitty lifestyle.

I'm not sure if you were replying to me or to Anon #1. But I'm just gonna reply to you because I think you misunderstood what I meant about those doctors and nurses. My point was a long the lines of you making the mistake thinking that every rich kid is like your friend that dropped out of whatever uni he went to, or those rich kids addicted to heroin. There are rich kids out there who choose to work hard and devote their lives to saving or helping people. And it doesn't necessarily have to be a doctor or nurse. In general, there are people out there who were born with everything and still continue to work hard (even though they don't have to) to help people. Money or lack of it does not make a person a scumbag, it's what he does.
"rich kids here aren't and can't do shit" = stereotype. But then again maybe it is your area in particular. I can actually relate because I've been seeing that alot lately with young rich kids buying heroin with what is most likely daddy's money. It bugs the fuck out of me.

In the eyes of the beholder.  Moving drugs is short hours, allowing for lots of time with family - and high pay.  Nurses and doctors make a shit ton of money... ever found out how much one brings home?  Not much because of malpractice insurance.  And thats thousands of school hours, (and more dollars there), and residency so you dont get to see loved ones or anything...

Sounds like the drug game is pretty intising.  Grab a "Get rich starter kit" and be gone with it!  Especially when now some drugs are actually considered medicine like meth and pot...

We've played this game in Finicials class and personal relations, as well as a few other classes.  Just because you make bank - doesnt mean you have money.  Not to mention my cousins wife - Has drove a BMW since 16, her family banks.  She became a Nurse... she makes money, but it dont make it home.  School loans and crap...

So in the eyes of the beholder (you) drug-dealing is the most practical and sensible lifestyle choice because of the amount of money it brings in for the little amount of actual work hours it requires? Maybe so, but what are you actually DOING? Selling drugs, and unlike a pharmacist, you probably know little about drug interaction, pharmacology, the varying affects drugs can have from one individual to another. You're also selling drugs that are intended for solely recreational purposes unless you sell blood pressure meds and antibiotics too?

No, but why would you if you were rich?  Its the get rich quick part that gets people.  Its like a pyramid scheme.  You have one rich person that has a good idea (grower, producer, ect) and gets pawns to sell the idea while they sit there and rake in (street pushers).  Why risk yourself like that?  If you have money and such, you dont have to sell drugs.  Its just hand n hand.  Thats why if your like me - you try the drug game and realize it sucks.  So you stop, and get to the top.  Rather then being a buyer, you become the supplier.  Look at gangs and such.  The head person doesnt ever get caught... he has the money and the smarts to know how to do it and not get busted...

First off read the post I wrote before you jump all over me. I said a nurse/doctor CAN come from a rich family, point being, they have everything, don't have spend years in med school, but choose to do so anyway because they want to help people in addition to earning a salary. You're arguing semantics. I don't know the exact fucking salary of the family of the example I gave. Shit. And what the fuck does RTFP mean?
Play the game in finacials? I don't know about you're sister's cousin's brother's wife or what the fuck ever, but the dr.s and nurses I know have a pretty decent income, especially after they put in their hours in the hospital and become specialized. And even more so if you are good at what you do. You're just feeding me everything you probably just learned in college this year. Or high school.
