I live in one of the top 15-20 most populated cities in the U.S. Wi-fi certainly isn't "everywhere on every pole in the city". Wi-fi certainly isn't on any major highway. In most major airports you have to pay for wi-fi. If you stay in a nice hotel, you have to pay for wi-fi. The bottom line is that wi-fi certainly isn't as prevalent and accessible as people think. If you're in an oasis of wi-fi connections then you should be able to find a laptop. The time you truly need internet is when you are out of range of wi-fi on the go, and on the road. Many smartphones can also get around this by *gasp* having BOTH wi-fi AND EVDO.
With an iphone you go out of range of wi-fi you lose internet connectivity. Period.
As for browsers, they are being developed quickly. There are now browsers with embedded flash that provide the same "full" internet that safari has. There will be more as well, thanks to the lovely "third party applications". Competition spurs innovation. Check out skyfire for the latest.
Apple has brilliant marketing. What they realized was that there was an entire horde of sheep who never needed a mobile internet device, but could be talked into thinking they did. Then they skimped on real fucntionality (e.g. a keyboard and 3g), packaged it with flashy features, and sold it. They realized that if you were a rich college kid, you would buy it just to be cool. Then they forced users to pay EVEN MORE by bundling it with an excessive rate plan.
With all that endlessly free wi-fi, how come you have to pay for an unlimited data plan with an iphone??...hmmmm. Consider that the "unlimited data" is the EDGE network (read: non-functional). If you pay for a useless data plan, then you fit apples mold: DUMB.
There will be clones because apple managed to create a new demographic for mobile internet phones: people who don't need them. Apple proved retards will pay for hyped, substandard technology. Who wouldn't clone that and get in on the aciton?
