Gradient option doesn't work for special characters?

Dear Ythan, I noticed today that when I attempt to put rainbow colors on the characters "ಠ_ಠ" the characters disappear and are replaced with question marks.  Any chance of fixing this?

Edit: Whoa, that was weird.  It shows up as question marks when I preview the post but when I actually post it deletes my attempt at a gradient.  Glitches in the matrix!

The original code I am trying to use is as follows: {gradient:#FF0000,#00FF15}ಠ_{/gradient}
