dude, how is this a scam?

He simply said he'll be out of town for a few days and he'll have a money order sent to you. Which means you can cash it before you agree to have him come PICK IT UP and you can work out any shortcomings face-to-face.

sounds legit to me

I have never received a check from a money order. Always cash.

A money order is a check. You buy them at the post office or at village pantry. I believe you are talking about western union wire transfers.

It's a very common CL scam. Not legit at all.
They send you a fake money order or cashiers check. You take it to the bank and deposit it.
The bank doesn't know it's a fake right off the bat.
2 days later the "buyer" writes back saying WHERE IS MY ITEM? I WANT My MONEY BACK NOW.
Or, they make the check for way too much. And then after you deposit it, ask for the difference back (usually about $400).
If you send them back money, you are screwed. Well you are screwed either way.
~2 weeks later, the bank finds out the check was a fake, and make you pay for it and/or closes your account for trying to deposit a fraudulent check.
You lose.

Also, he didn't say HE would pick it up. He said he would "arrange" for it to be picked up. This is what they say in every scam letter. You are selling an item for $1,200. He would send you a fake check for $1,600 or so.. saying he will arrange for someone to pick it up. After you deposit it, he starts sending angry emails saying he wants his money back, or to pay back the difference. You lose either way. It's a major scam. And a very common one.

:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

This is why the scam works.

The money order isn't real, it doesn't matter if you can cash it and get the money... it's illegal and you are now responsible for fraud and legal action will ensue.

He won't pick the item up, the money order is for MORE then the price of the item, he will then ask you to send the difference back.

He gets money, you get money... unfortunately, your money is illegal and will be recovered with or without legal consequences.

His wont, therefor he wins.

I got the same thing a few years ago when I was clearing out my house to move over here.. I didn't fall for it after doing a bit of research.
Chubba hit the nail on the head.

I see.

I don't blame him for being careful.

Personally, I would never sell my shit on craigslist or ebay. Face-to-face or no go. Cash in hand or no item. Simple as that.

One example. When I was younger I worked as a cashier at a gas station. Towards the end of the night one time I was helping a customer, and he bought a soda and paid with a 20. As I was getting his change he asked if he could have change for another 20. I don't remember exactly how the transaction went down, but it ended up with him telling me I owed him another $20 that I didn't think was right. It was a lot of here I give you this, then you give me this, and I'll give you this type deal. The man in line behind this gentleman agreed strongly with the guy I was waiting on and swore he was correct. I was confused and intimidated by the two of them, who had walked in separately and agreed to give up the money. My drawer was $20 short that night. Just one example, good scam artists are intelligent and devious.

Those two guys were working together. Watch the Real Hustle, its a BBC3 program. They basically go around hustling fools, and showing you how common scams are done, it's pretty good.
