Gypsum - Which form is referenced by everyone?
    #12672191 -

When people speak of using gypsum in casing and substrate and spawn mixes at a ratio of 5-10% by volume are they talking about the granular kind that looks like little pebbles often found in boxes sold by a company called E.B. Stone Organics or are they talking about the powdered stuff that you can only find in huge 50lb bags?

Yes. They talk about both. Id say if you have powder, use less volume though as most of the time, its pellets most use.

I've never heard of anyone using straight-up pellets of gypsum in their substrates....either way you need to pulverize the gypsum so it mixes evenly.

No you dont. I use the pellets, RR uses them, and alot of people here do, they are small and dissolve when wet easily.

Hah, Guess I lugged and put two large plastic bags over a huge 50lb bag that was half off at the home improvement center because it had a tear in it into my apartment for nothing then...

I almost crushed up some drywall bringing the gypsum bag into the apartment.

When I use pelleted gypsum I usually throw it in my pasteurization water while I'm heating it so you get this gypsum slurry almost, and it seems to mix a lot more evenly. Plus more surface area=more efficient nutrient transfer.

i just ordered me some ultra-fine agricultural gypsum..40lbs...for like $4.50..heh.

I had a choice between granular, pulverized, and ultra-fine gypsum, i chose ultra-fine..was that a mistake?

i thought of better distribution and fast acting effects.

No, you're good.  I've found that even the granular breaks down easily when mixed into a damp substrate.  That's a good price.  I wish I could get it for that up here in the mountains.  With shipping, I have to pay nearly double that, and that's buying it by the pallet load of thirty six 50 pound bags per pallet.

dont feel bad..i didnt mention shipping =)

the 40lb purchase cost me $24.49

$20 shipping...its ok though.

Ok, now that I see you're on here tonight. I got a question for you. I just bought your "Let's Grows Mushrooms" DVD. Watched it, saw you applying gypsum to the substrate and the casing, which is where I got the idea to try it out.

One of the better results I've had:

Here's something I'm attempting to do... I've been having problems with the 1st flush. Rest of the time the fruits abort at about an inch. My problem was with the casing, I was using dolomitic lime. Since watching your video I've switched to hydrated lime.

My question is as follows:

what do you think of this casing mix recepie?

10 parts pete
10 paterts verm
1/4 part hydrated lime
1/4 part ground lime
1/4 part granular lime (large brown pellets)

I've measured the pH of the mix, its exactly at 7.

Here's my reasoning..hydrated lime will go into effect immediately and have the proper pH for the 1st flush. Ground lime takes a bit longer to take effect so it supports the 2nd flush, and finally the granular, coming into effects for the 3rd flush.

Does this make sense?

I should have results within 20 days...

Your results should give you your answer.

My 50lb bag of gypsum cost me $4, no shipping necessary.

I'd use just the hydrated lime.  It will last a month or two at least, and that's the life of a casing layer anyway.  There's no need for long term buffers.  Try to get your pH up to about 8 or so to start.

how do i get to pH 8??? it seems that no matter how much lime i add, i cannot exceed 7.5...and thats with A LOT OF LIME...so much that i wont use it as casing, was just an experiment.

if i do 10 parts pete, 10 parts verm, 1/4 part hydrated lime, pH is at 7...i need to add like 1 part hydrated lime for it to get to 7.5

what am i doing wrong? how do i get to 8???

RR aren't you in the PNW?  Got a Freddy nearby?  They have 25lb bags of Lilly Miller garden gypsum for $12.50 now, and probably until the end of summer.
