Isn't it incredible that the internet has created it's own form of language.
    #12437467 -

If you don't think your generation/our generation is doing anything historical as a collective, you should think again!

We are (currently) and have been (the last 20 years) collectively creating a new form of language, aka: 1337speak

its fascinating, globalized and progressive, new words are created daily and old ones become invalid. Memes are infecting our language and our minds...and it has overlapped into actual reality, no longer only inhabiting virtual reality. It's history and the making and we are apart of it!

i think the most interesting thing about the english language is that it was never given a strict set of guidelines.

yes, there are basic structures (sentence subject, verb, etc.) but there was never any clearly defined casual or proper syntax.. no masculine or feminine conjugations..

without these rules in place it allows the language to evolve in a much different way than many others..

while i dont think leetspeak is the pinnacle of the languages evolution, it is an interesting blip in the radar.

the english language is one of the hardest languages to learn because of the style it is. it uses root words and stuff like that whereas chinese, japanese etc use symbols. that symbol expresses an idea that can mean various things depending on the other ideas/symbols around it.

I don't think the 1337speak as you put it is another language as much as it is really a form of slang or dialect or whatever you want to call it.  l33t isn't a word in and of itself, its just a "l33t" way of typing "elite".....

Subcultures create their own (variations) on language. They do this to distinguish themselves from the social norm.

when I said "form" of language, i was meaning dialect.

Yet it is something outside of the realm of being a dialect. it is not a synthesis of previously existing languages. it is a technology of language itself, it is creating something new that has never been seen before. it is a form of language that does not give privilege to spoken word, yet still valid to be spoke.

speech is the privilege voice of reason. normal language gives privilege to spoken word over written word, 1337speak is the complete opposite, something not seen b4 by humanity.

its implications are not as obvious and the impact they have is much more passive, yet still valid and recognizable.

I think 1337speak is gay.  Like buttsex gay.  I've never heard a woman say "Oh, that 1337speak turns me on."

1337speak is just a butchered version of the english language. Similar to the dialect that inner city gangs use except targeted at 12 years olds.

it has been seen before.. its still english just with a slang spin on things.

youre right, its not a synthesis of anything.. its just a restructuring of existing words.. not even a restructuring of a language.. just words themselves.

its restructured to be READ and not SPOKEN, even though it CAN be spoken

its the opposite of how normal languages are created, spoken first, then written. 1337speak is written first, then spoken.

if you don't see how this is and has been shaping society itself and the way we speak and even write now-a-days you are either naive or blind.
