Ubuntu question

I wanna learn the ubuntu/linux OS. I'm still pretty unfamilular with it. But can I transfer all my files from vista to ubuntu and how?:mushroom2: thanks?

Yes you can, at least from within Ubuntu. Have you installed Ubuntu? It can read (and write) from windows NTFS drives. If it is on a different disk/partition on your computer, you will will see something like "500 GB Filesystem" in nautilus (explorer). You can just access it from there, it mounts when you click on it.

Edit: you can also transfer them via an external drive or usb-stick.

Linux Mint is an excellent version of Ubuntu with a few extra features to make it more user friendly.

I would start with Ubuntu. Mint isn't that more user friendly and it is easier to find solutions for Ubuntu problems because it is so common.

Yes, Ubuntu is extremely well documented and has a lively community. Spinoffs such as Xubuntu are a good alternatives, as solutions for Ubuntu usually work for the spinoffs as well.

Also, Ubuntu (and many other distros) can be run in a virtual environment and from a live CD/DVD, allowing prospective users to get used to the system before replacing their current OS with it.

Good points
Virtual box is a good way to evaluate a distro as well.

A program called Unetbootin is a good way to make a usb bootable version that doesn't require an installation and runs very fast.

I don't go anywhere without Backtrack on USB.

im having trouble getting firefox to work on it. It says my wireless connection is working but when i click firefox it says it can't find a server or something. anyone?

i dont kmnow what you mean by ping. But it shows my wireless connection in the upper right hand corner and show its signal at full strength. when i hover the mouse over it, it says online, currently connected to "name of wireless network".

but firefox says it cant find a server:shrug:

Right click on the connection icon and click "connection information". Does it show an IP address, broadcast address and primary DNS?

Pinging is sending a message to a computer and asking for a reply, the most basic communication mostly used to see if there is any connection possible. You can do this by opening a terminal (applications->accessories->terminal) and typing, for example, ping www.google.com, or ping 66.102.11.104

It will then show you the time it took to get a reply from the computer you are pinging. At least when it can ping.

It will try this repeatedly until you tell it to stop. Use ctrl+c (^c) to stop any process in the terminal.
