Re: Anyone else NOT do texting? [Re: MisterMuscaria]
    #12402184 -

i can't call my boyfriend on the phone because it causes interference with his hearing aids, and i can't talk to him in person because he lives in New Zealand, so texting works well for me when it comes to talking to him. however, i have found myself texting people a whole lot more now that i have a full keypad on my phone. i definitely don't text as much as just about all of my friends, but i do find it to be convenient when i don't want to have an entire conversation with someone; instead of making up some excuse to hang up the phone, i can just not reply to a text and that's that.

I like texting.

I think it's a much more "low-key" method of communication.

There are often things I want to ask my friends or family, but that aren't very urgent.  I mean, if I want to know if my friend Livvy wants to go to the baseball game next weekend, it's not a do-or-die thing.  Why would I call her and make her drop every thing she is doing right then to talk with me.  It's much more convenient for everyone involved to just send a text that she can reply to at her leisure.

You've a bill phone? La di da!

I spend about 20e on credit every three weeks and I've free calls to everyone on my network and free texts to my network(most people I know are on the same one).

€ 20 / 3 weeks?  My subscription is like € 8 / month, with all my calls and text messages usually being within my 'bundle', so no additional costs.

That must be a low end bundle, like you don't make many calls?

No, I don't, that's true. I used to, but now my gf and I have been living together for quite a while and there's not really a need for long phone calls anymore  I mostly communicate through email and face to face, calls and texts I only use for short communication & coordination. I don't pay for the phone itself either, btw, after having had several subscriptions that allowed me to pick a new phone once in a while. I don't need that shit; I've had the phone I'm using now for 4 or 5 years and it works just fine.

So fucking annoying when you are chilling with someone

and they CONSTANTLY pull out their phone to text MULTIPLE people

I'm like dude..... if you don't wanna chill with me, just get the fuck outta here and go talk to yer gay friends :crankey:

Cmon MisterMuscaria.  Technology is always changing and evolving into something different.  Did you show the same resistance to the computer when the internet was made available to almost every household?  Texting is very convenient.  If you like talking on the phone, great.....talk away.  But some of your friends may not like talking as much as you and would rather just shoot you a text.  I was once like you and thought all this texting is for the birds, but once I gave it a shot, it's pretty damn cool.  Now get off the computer and waltz on down to your cell phone provider and get texting put back on your phone.  Go!

How do you do this, PLEASE?  I hate getting texts and I don't read them.  All they are good for is annoying me...  I tell everyone that I don't read their texts and yet they send them anyway, I don't get it.

Almost never, I don't have time to type a bunch of shit on a tiny keypad that I could have said in ten fucking seconds.

Oh, and its fucking annoying when you won't answer your phone, but will text for hours on end. We know your not busy, losers! Way to lengthen and make this way of communicating so impersonal.

i realize this is hyperbole... but i'm just wondering what your justification for even the basest form of this statement is.

even if they don't literally "epitomize" the world's problem, clearly you think this is somehow actually a world problem.  how is that exactly?  please elaborate.

What if there are in class and are texting you during a quick break in the lesson but not enough time to call? What then? 9/11 all over again.

lol, yeah I was half kidding

I don't mean technology in itself (awesome tool to increase communication), but text messaging as a depersonalization of our expanding communication

just one more thing to further disconnection between people, which I think results in a reduction of empathy

lack of empathy is responsible for much of the hate in this world

much more emotion is conveyed through speech as opposed to text

some people go out of their way to text as a way of avoiding speaking directly to someone

True but texting also allows more communication from people who wouldn't have called or spoken directly in the first place.

This is why I guess my view of texting is soured. I know all too many people like that.
When I did have texting I got tired of getting "FW:fw:fw:fw:blah blah blah".
Basically I was paying for something I only used 3 times a month myself but got SPAMMED with 10 times a day.
