Antivirus XP

Somehow I got that damn Antivirus XP virus.  I looked around the internet for a way to fix it, short of re-installing Windows, but nothing has worked.  Does anyone know how to get rid of it?  Thanks.

google, download hijack this. Run the log file through iamnotageek (google it) and kill the identified problems. restart in safe mode if you can find the locations and registry entries online.

In my experience, running a battery of products such as a full corporate symantec client, ATFCleaner, 3-5 different registry cleaners, hijack this, and several other manual manuvers will sometimes get rid of a nasty virus. This can take all day. 

With my solid state drives it takes me about 20 min to reinstall win7 ultimate, and another 30 to install ALL of my operating software im used to. Maybe another 2 hours of off and on to get all the games and shit patched. I do this later usually.

So in under 3 hours i have a system that is faster, cleaner, more stable, and guaranteed to not still have a virus, or key logger etc. Make a habit of taking install files from shit like browsers, updated drivers, and other shit you normally download on disc or card. This will save you lots of time when formating.

Thanks a lot man.  So far, I've downloaded Hijack This and I ran it through iamnotageek.  It showed me all of the problem files in bright red and I clicked "Fix problem" on hijackthis.  But it won't let me delete the problems.  It comes up with a window that says "Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator". 

Also, I started it back up in safe mode, but I didn't know what to do after that.  It won't let me run hijackthis in safe mode.

Wait, I think it's gone!  The icon is gone and the pop ups stopped after I did a Search and Destroy.  I think Hijackthis took care of most of it and then Spybot finished it off.  Thanks a lot, rodfarva!

for sho. I forgot to mention tho, when you run hijackthis! you need to start it as an administrator: right click and click run as admin. Theres a good reason you should run hijack this every day for the next week. It only takes a min.

Now go clean out your temporary net files (ATF cleaner) and delete most of the shit in your browsers download folder. Then go to major geeks web site and pick three of their free registry cleaners and run them with a restart in between.

While your at it, start safe mode and go delete shit you dont need anymore. next go into start menu and type 'msconfig' click the startup tab and uncheck anything like messaging software, browsers, MS word basically anything that you added (and your sure isn't a necessary part of the operating system.) look for anything resembling the virus.

then ctrl+alt+del and go to processes. Look for stuff you dont recognize thats not listed as microsoft, and google the name. This doesnt take long once you get used to what should be there. Realize tho, stuff can be hidden from this list.

finally i would delete everything in your startup folder, but thats just me.

just a few extra steps to make sure it stays gone.

yeah, fuck system restore all day. Download acronis or something, and do manual backups. This will eventually pay for itself in the time you spend fixing shit. only wise computer users make frequent backups of all sentimental data. Then scan, and scan, and scan again. Use multiple software solutions to scan the same things. Amazing how one will miss something.

Thanks a lot for the help, you guys.  Unfortunately, my computer is now dead.  I have ordered a new one from Dell.  I guess I should still have all this stuff when I get my new one.

linuxmint.com is nice too.  there is barely any amount of virus that a reformat cant fix.

ive not used ubuntu for a long time.. never installed mint.

i assume ubuntu has a much, much larger user base though.. probably a lot easier to get help.

but again, i never installed mint.. :shrug:

Are you guys talking about alternatives to Windows?  As for my computer, I wasn't even able to make it to the Desktop.  It just turned black.  I tried to reinstall Windows, and it didn't make it to the disk.  Just black.  I'm sure there was probably some way to save it, but it was 6 years old.  It's time to get a new one.  My old computer had 80 gigs.  My new one will have 500 gigs.

yeah i was saying if it was just a windows problem then you might be able to install Linux and have a little fun with it.

great way to breathe new life into an old machine..

Windows.  I've never met anyone else who ran anything else, so I'm going to stick with the tried and true.  I guess I'll just get things like Spybot, CCleaner, Peer Block and some of the things you guys have mentioned in this thread.  I probably should invest in some sort of a firewall.  I hate paying for it, but AVG Free might not be strong enough.

I came across a comp that would POST up then just display a black screen like you're describing. I used an XP SP3 disc to fix it.... boot from the cd (make sure your boot order is set to boot from CDROM) and choose repair your windows installation. This will give you a command prompt... type in fixboot. That should do it. If not, you might want to boot off a boot disk with a windows shell and open up cmd and run a chkdsk /r. If THAT doesn't fix it, you may have to reinstall... Are you sure you're setting up your boot order in BIOS?

You can throw in the ubuntu cd and try it before you install. If you want to go ahead and install, do so after installing windows. You can have the installer automatically shrink your existing partition, install ubuntu, and install GRUB, a bootloader, so you can boot both. I currently have Win7, XP, and ubuntu in a triple boot configuration on my PC.....although I'm thinking of scratching XP because Windows 7 is blowing my mind right now. :smile: Never thought 'd say those words.... :lol:
