Check your funny pages. aside from comics like Calvin and Hobbes, they all are pretty much. (the modern ones) nowadays comics are just xeroxed talking heads... which Bill Watterson had to fight his ass off to make his strip able to be what it was.

But, yeah I'm not the best at writing jokes, which is what this thread was originally about, lol...

Yup...

and yeah. It's a simple type of direct humor, set up the joke and deliver the punch line. :shrug:

It's simple so I can do it. The whole idea is to be experimental in how simplistic I can go with the art, and how I the characters can interact with what is on the page.

This is the type of interacting with what would otherwise be unnoticed by the cartoon characters. I want the character to be aware they that are cartoons. It's all an experimental comic strip, really. :shrug:

the first two strips are laid out so haphazardly that i couldn't even bring myself to read them, and the two one-liners are so bland that 10 seconds after reading them i don't remember what they were about

i wish i were exaggerating and being overly harsh on you, but that is the literal truth

Also with comics it's a numbers game. You make one for every idea you have and weed out the bad/unsuccessful ones, and keep the good. I have made a total of like 5 strips of these characters that I invented yesterday. Not tryna win the Pulitzer...

i know this is coming off as dickish, and i apologize
i really don't like being insulting, but it's either that or i just lie to you

all 5 of these are maximum bland, and i could be wrong but it seems like they're off the top of your head, no thought or revision applied

i don't know anything about you personally, i'm not trying to say you don't have potential or you're an idiot or anything like that, i'm just saying that these comics are in my opinion neither worth reading nor creating

i think earlier in the thread you mentioned Watterson
he really was the master of the comic strip, and if you're serious about cartooning then you should go back, look at his stuff, and try to deconstruct it

i myself have wanted to make a webcomic for over five years, but i've never done it because when i step back and honestly look at what i've produced so far, i have to admit that it's not worth reading

i have fun making what i make, and i'm sure you had fun making these, but that is not the measure of worth

you gotta be honest with yourself and ask, if someone else showed me this, would i care about it
if the answer is no, it's gotta be back to the drawing board

I'm on the middle of that now. These are all just from the top of my head, just to get my hands on these characters and see how to draw them, see what works with them, etc. I'm just playing. I understand that they aren't great, which is why I didn't claim they were. I do appreciate your honesty. Right now I'm jut playing around, I am actually revising a lot of them now. I find that making several versions will be necessary to choose the best one :shrug:

hey man, while i will admit.. the jokes are pretty cheesy..

at least you've gotten around to starting this madness. and thats respectable.

work on the jokes and keep the design horizontal and linear and you'll have a pretty good strip going.

the last one was funnier than the others. not the best humor, but with a little work and inspiration.. you'll get it.
