Sam&Sun

I'll update this thread weekly (or however often I can...)

This is my comic strip called, "Sam&Sun". It's about Sam, (a daft philosopher type) and his conversations with Mr.Sun. (the sun)

This is the first ever strip I've made with these characters, so here goes:
(Note that I am going for direct, simple, and funny pages type of humor. I know you're not gonna break a rib, here . . .)

I'm sorry, but if you can't think of your own jokes you don't have much of a future as a cartoonist.

Also, you don't really want to mimic Garfield's humor.

My advice:

Step 1: Read a ton of Calvin and Hobbes, Far Side, Perry Bible Fellowship, and any other comics (or webcomics) you might enjoy. Study what it is about them that you like.
Step 2:  Decide on a format. Do you want one panel? Three or four? Variable amounts? Do you want it to be a page-by-page comic book setup? That will affect what kind of jokes you use a lot.
Step 3: ??
Step 4: PROFIT

Wow you sound like a "Cartoonist for Beginners" book, I stated that it was only for fun. and I don't want to mimic anything. Lots of cartoon strips get their jokes form writers. I have a cast of characters so it obviously isn't gonna be a "Gag-A-Day" format (well, Ziggy is like that but...)

Mort Walker got a lot of his jokes from Dik Brown, who also inked for him. and Johnny Hart also contributed a lot of jokes/gags to Mort Walker. It's the oldest set up. Writer and artist. I'm not trying to have a "future" either it's only for fun...

I appreciate the advice, though it is a little obvious. And yeah, I read a shit ton of comics already.

I'm just not good at writing jokes, and I wondered if anyone here was

Well, you said "help me write" not "write for me," hence my post.

If you're looking for someone to write for you that's a completely different story.

"It's all greek to me" got started in Shakespeare's "The Tragedy of Julius Caesar" and most people would still get the joke without knowing that, anyways...

Greek/Roman is pretty much the same to the average person, and some people might even think he was Greek

these panels are hard to follow. i mean that you cant really tell whos talking first or second. they need to be organized better.

i do like the concept thought.

Yeh, I found that out too. I have trouble with it myself when proofing it...

I wanted to have no word bubbles, just typewriter font, like in the way old days of newspaper comics, word bubbles didn't com around in every strip until comics started to get really popular... it was always hand written and numbered

Since I have no panels or word bubbles I'm gonna number what you should read first, 1, 2, 3, etc.

I wanted to have it free and devoid of landscape. I wanted the text to be the landscape, which I why I did it like that. I does definitely need numbering though...

If I number it, it shouldn't be a problem...

i dunno, numbers may look a little out of place...

but if you are going for an old school look then it may just work.

Yeah, I'm goin' for weird/old school. I'll have my characters climbing on the text itself and hanging from the hooks of giant G's, etc. It an experimental comic strip that is mainly influenced by psychedelics...
