this isn't just about bittorrent, its also about websites like HULU.

Infact its mostly about HULU i imagine.

At anyrate we pay a monthly fee for access to the internet, we pay for speed.  They are trying to CENSOR the internet by blacklisting websites and putting them into "premium" networks.

However, here's the catch, do you allow a cooperation to make decisions like this?  Or do you get pissed off at them....think about that for a second before viewing the spoiler below.

Now are you pissed off enough to turn the internet over to our government?  for yet another takeover.  But this time we want it to happen...nice setup huh?  but this is just to get there feet in the doors, wait to see what happens after they've been invited.

they can change labels for any site they want.

as said above, hulu could be deemed a "premium" site which would force you to increase your service and monthly cost.

the entire bittorrent protocol could be blocked entirely even if you use it for legitimate reasons (like i often do) unless you pay more.

its extortion.

no discussion of government regulation would be complete without conspiracy theories...

yes, lets keep them out of the internet just like they are kept out of the postal service, public school system, fda, nhtsa, etc etc..

in some places you are forced to. its either that or dialup.

broadband penetration in the US isnt high enough to be able to restrict access to anyone. even if it was thats fucked up. the people who can afford information have the ability to learn and the people who cant afford it are left in ignorance.

taking information away from people is NEVER a good idea no matter how you look at it.

meh, man's got a point.  You can live without internet, it's a privilege, not a right.

Although I do wish web neutrality was the way it was of course.

thats my precise point. we shouldnt act as if its our god given right to demand this and that. these corporations invest tons of money in a private sector. they should be able to control what goes through their system. if there was tons of kiddie porn flowing through you would be bitching about how they promote kiddie porn. cmon they provide a service, which at this point hasnt been regulated by the gov. they work with the gov when they have to though. i think people just fail to realize that these companies are private businesses and assume you are entitled to things, which is false. YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED. you are entitled to be alive and not be a slave according to the us gov, but a priv corp doesnt owe shit to you when they invest fucking assloads of money into a service that you just use to jack off with. they take all the financial risk you fuck, they built it, you didnt do shit except pay them to use it. they determine the terms not you. i just get pissed off because its like if you own a small business and you get some fuck that comes in & tries to demand the terms of your business. no fuck you if you want to come here this is the deal there is no negotiation.

what about people who are poor, living in the middle of nowhere. comcast is their only option.

should information that could educate and help improve their condition be held back because they cant afford the "premium" information?

this would only help in facilitating the dumbing down of our country.

i cant understand how anyone would say, "no, i want to live in complete ignorance. make it impossible for me to educate myself and further the advancement of the human race."

they provide a "connection"  they don't own the internet...not yet.  This is also a privacy issue.

Also customers are always right havn't you heard?

Lastly, this is a public service.  Its not like there's another way to get it.  Not broadband anyway.  Where I live for example, there's cable, and dialup...thats it.  And there's only one cable company.  And if this premium network shit takes off it won't matter if there's other companys.

This is about money and control and milking the customers.  Do you like being milked?

its not a public service at all. internet is a luxury believe it or not. you just think its your right because it is so accessible in todays age. in response to frith, i understand about people that are poor or may only have a single provider. however thats not the providers fault that they are the only company in the area. if you want to blame them how about they pull out of the area and there is no provider? it ISNT A RIGHT. it is a PRIVATE SERVICE! however i believe that information should be free and not subject to bias, however internet isn't exactly defined as THE source of information. there will be future revelations i guarantee, but right now i dont think the situation is defined very well. the internet is relatively young if you consider how long it has been mainstream.

just because its not run by the government doesn't mean its not a public service.  What would you say if all the grocery stores suddenly stopped and said...you know what were going to band together and double or triple the prices on everything?  Oh and were also going to just take chips, cupcakes, and soda off the shelves altogether.

sure maybe they can do all this by law, but its still a service to the public, one that we expect.  Just like we expect a telephone line, and electricity.  so maybe you don't like the way i used "public service", well now you know what i ment.

true. however, a LOT of information is available ONLY on the internet. chances are if a town is small enough to have only one provider (which i assume is a large portion of the US) the town's library cant be very extensive or up to date.

while not defined, net is becoming the primary source for all exchange of information.

think research papers available to university students. that is available online only. it does not exist anywhere else.

i think youre right (to a point) in the fact that internet access is more of a luxury.. we dont need it to survive. however, i do think access to information is a right and we should not be denied access to it due to unavoidable economic or regional issues.

Exactly.

relative, your arrogance in your opinion is that of a child. No one in this thread is cursing or saying anything demeaning regarding this subject, I would seriously appreciate if you would just get the FUCK out of this thread if you aren't going to approach this discussion in a respectable manner. This is serious business and will forever have an impact on the porn you watch. Which will sooner rather than later be deemed, 'premium' content.

With that being said, the subject of Net Neutrality is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg regarding the interwebz. When the telecommunications industry was established, many people felt that having phone service was a luxury. Soon enough though, many many people began using the service. It's become something so benign to us, many forget that it wasn't even 100 years ago that this technology was established. Where would we be without phone service? Hell, let me take it into the 21st century, your iPhone? Many would argue that phone service is a right. That nothing should be limited in its use, besides necessary FCC regulation regarding the service.

These technologies are growing, in use and function. Today the internet is the most powerful tool the young generation has, sounds kind of like phone service back in the day, doesn't it? Regulation is a step in the right direction, however 'big government' it may seem. This tech is so powerful that it has literally changed the world as we know it. Everything from information to entertainment is contained on the internet. Yet, it's power does not rest in it's ability to provide you this, it's power rests in the ability for ANYONE to provide you with that information.

The internet has changed my life forever, without it I wouldn't be who I am today. Without it, the Shroomery would never have existed. For this alone I am indebted. To allow companies to control what type of information I'm allowed to access is essentially tearing away my first amendment right to free speech. You don't let your phone company tell you what you can and cannot talk about over your phone do you? Why would you allow them to control access to the biggest library ever conceived?

With industry comes regulation. We regulate oil companies, the stock market, automobile companies, the meat industry, trucking; Everything you use on a daily basis is in some way regulated, even your job is regulated! Big Government is here to stay, unless something incredibly catastrophic happens, but then if that happened, the internet would be the LAST thing on your mind.

Net Neutrality has a purpose. I for one agree with that purpose.

Always remember, the power of the internet does not lie in the ISPs ability to provide you with information, but in the ability of anyone to openly exchange said information.

banding together is called collusion btw. just because its offered to the public, doesnt make it a public service. you are just fucking wrong and accept it. you prob live in america which is a fucking CAPITALIST country. do you think you live in a communist country or something? free enterprise is what this country is supposed to be based around. dont hate on shit because you think you are entitled to something you arent. if a company cant determine their price, which they compete with others, than that isnt a capitalist country. if they take the risk they should be allowed to collect a profit. PRIVATE CORP ARE FOR PROFIT!

were a socialist country now, havn't you been reading the news?  The bigger the population grows the more busy our lives get.  Isn't communication a right?  Well if you notice a persons common day, that seems to be getting harder and harder, imagine if telephones and the internet were turned off, we would be loosing a basic human need, or a right.

I really don't give a dam what the definition of a public service is, i stated that in my last post.  View my message not how i use 2 words.  Ill give you the first time you brought it up, but i did clarify the second time...so drop it.

Lastly, if these corps need money all they need to do is rise the price, instead they want to REGULATE the internet....thats a big difference, and again is a privacy issue as well.  It can very easy be crossing the line on freedom of speech too.

the thing is these corp havent even said and/or prob wont regulate content. all of these people are getting bitchy about "their freedom of content" but they are a bunch of fucking tards. the reality of the situation is they dont give a fucking shit about your independent content what you say blah blah. its all about whether or not a provider will be able to limit the bandwidth of totally filter another provider/conglomerates websites content. which makes no FUCKING SENSE. they wont do that oh lets ban youtube blah blah. that wont happen because people will switch providers. its a free market. you go to a provider that will provide the service. areas may be limited in their service now, but it wont be that way in the future. what i argue is that a business that provides a service that they put up the money to provide, can do what they want. this isnt a necessity by any means. its not forced so fuck off choose something else. this is the foundation of this country, free market capitalism.
