cacti identification
    #1214942 - 01/13/03 02:00 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

heres two suspect looking (to my untrained eye) cacti
i picked them up at kent building supplies today.

the first is a colomnar lovely with about 11 ribs, around 15 white spines per areole, 4 of which are large, and one is VERY prominent in the center. spines are dark towards tip. areoles are white and fuzzy some newer ones have longer white hairs.
no real "V" notch, but certainly a decent notch above each areole.
heres some more of #1

#2 seems more promising to me but what do i know?
white areoles, brown spines, definate clearly visable "V" notch above each areole most visable on newer growth, spines not as thick as former specimine, has smaller cactus
of apparently the same species at base. 8 ribbed. also has longer white hairs on newer areoles

what do you think? i doubt its anything active, however certainly its nice cacti and possibly something closely related?

At first glance, it looks like a Trichocereus, but it most likely is a Cereus.

id go with Trichocereus(maybe Chiloense)
Can you count how many spins per group?
i cant quite make it out in the pic but looks like
10 to 15 spines per group.

I would say both are Stetsonia coryne, aka the toothpick cactus.

one may be, but these are two distinct speceis, that cannot both be the same thing.
the first one has very thick hard white spine, the second has finer brown spines, both have about 15 per areole

Cacti can be really variable even within a species. I'm sure of the second one and pretty sure of the first...my next best guess would be Azureocereus hertlingiana (spelling might be a little off), but I still think it's a Stetsonia.

Are those hairs on the second one or did your cat brush up against it?
