Particle physics inqueries
    #12027080 -

1. what do the lines mean in this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Elementary_particle_interactions.svg

and what does this show?: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Feynmann_Diagram_Gluon_Radiation.svg
it says it's the standard model in physics but I don't understand it, can someone explain?  This isn't for school just curiosity.

I think the first one shows simply shows what can interact with what.  For example the gluons can only interact with other gluons and quarks, while photons can interact with leptons, quarks and the w+/w-.

The second one is a Feynman diagram, obviously.  Follow the time axis from left to right and you see a negative electron and positive anti-electron interacting to form a virtual photon, the squiggly line.  That photon then decays into the quark pair and a gluon.  I basically just restated the caption underneath it.  Is there one part of that which doesnt make sense?

1.)  I think the lines represent potential interactions, or particles that can interact with each other.  There is a description under the image that explains it a little.

2.)  That is a Feynmann Diagram.  If I understand correctly, it depicts an electron and anti-electron (or positron) annihilating and emitting a photon.  The photon then becomes a quark/anti-quark pair, and emits a gluon.  One cool thing about Feynmann Diagrams is they directly correspond to complex equations in particle physics.

I could be wrong about both of these BTW, I'm sure DieCommie will be here soon to clear up anything I got wrong.

why is there the green squiggly line?

That's the gluon that is emitted.

Did you study physics, or is it just a hobby?

Did he dream about dragons? Did he dream about deer? Did he whisper  he names of friends who were near?
What songs did they play, and how far away? Why did he whisper, why did she scream?
What does the sound of a screen door mean?
Who talks on the hill? Who goes to the cellar, can you feel the chill? Where does the river, when will the wind?
How far are the mountains? Where do they end? Why would the church?
Did the service begin? Tell me who died, and tell me who cried.
Help me hide in the skin of a deer, my zippered-up bag in the mouth of a stag so swiftly I go through rows of does,
it flows, it flows, it flows, it flows all over the hill where the green grass grows.

I am in my second year as a physics major.  So I am studying classical physics right now, electricity and magnetism.  Particle physics I study as a hobby right now :smile2:

I'm a fitness major at my school and only got to take introductory physics and chem because that was all I had needed.  I read "A Brief History of Time" and always was into sagan and kaku so I always heard about shit I never got into in my intro classes.

Fist semester of college(i'm now in my 4th semester) I asked my physics professor what quarks and gluons were and his eyes lit up, he explained a watered down version then approached me after class asking if I was interested in a physics major, you should have seen his face change when I said no thanks man I'm good with health and fitness. ahhahaha

Also, I love my major, but I seem to be the only science oriented mind that I know of so far(wonder why..? lol).

I'm not a big Hawking fan, but some people are.  Some great introductory particle physics books I have read lately are:

The Lightness of Being

and

Understanding the Universe: From Quarks to the Cosmos

I read The Elegant Universe and it sparked my interest.  I've always loved math, and took a couple required physics courses for my major, but never got into anything past electromagnetism.  I'm seriously considering doing undergrad part 2, but in physics this time.

I don't know why people hate on school and science. Why WOULDN'T you want to learn about how everything works?? The natural world is soo rich and full of math chemistry and physics. I really regret not taking science courses in highschool because I would be faaaar smarter than I am now.

It seems like even the people in my chemistry program at college don't have a genuine interest in science. I seem to be the only one who enjoys learning about science as a hobby aswell.

that's what I'm talkin about lol, I'm a fitness major yet in my free time I read about this.  I know an engineering major who in his free time writes music -this guy though is setting up to hate his life though, only in engineering because his mom told him so :frown: sad.
