physics question

E=mc2
so technically nothing can reach the speed of light because the mass of an object increases proportional to it's speed. it would need an infinite amount of energy. but how is it that an objects mass increases the faster it goes? this doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me. can someone explain? i havent taken physics in a good 4 years.

The mass most people know is "rest mass", which is different than "relativistic mass". An example is a photon which has no rest mass but does have a relativistic mass.
Basically in physics there are different ways to define mass.

why are so many people viewing a thread called physics question? i certainly wouldnt go near this thread if i didnt post it (or think i could answer it).
PS 5 shrooms to whoever can help me understand this. that and i'll let you try out my time machine once it's complete

Give me a few minutes to call my pledge dad, the physics major... I just hope he's not drunk/high yet.
-------------------- The story goes, or the way that I was told There was a king that always felt too high and then he fell too low And so he called all the wise men to the hall And begged them for a gift to end the rises and the falls But here’s the thing, they came back with a ring It was simple and was plainly unbefitting of a king Engraved in black, it had no front or back But there were words around the band that said Just know: This Too Shall Pass

just force it till your brain bleeds, then you will die, then it won't matter and you won't have to ask these types of questions.
problem solved! now give me 3 milliong dollars please before I call the cops.

then i'm doomed. i'm never going to get this time machine working by the time i get assassinated. once i find out who the assassin is i have to go back in time and off him, so he can't assassinate me in the future. kind of complicated, but what it all comes down to is that i need answers!!

Does it help that c = (E/m)^0.5 ?

"Rest mass" is the mass that you meaure when you weigh something. Its also the mass that you feel when you try to push something heavy. This mass doesnt change due to a relative velocity, its an invarient mass. So far physicists think the mass you wiegh and the mass you feel when accelerating something are the same.
"Relativistic mass" is the mass you get from having something with a velocity. Basically when an object has a velocity, it has an energy (Kinetic energy) and this energy can be thought of as a mass via E = M c^2.
I know that the above is not quite correct, but hopefull it helps more than it hurts.

The only reason mass has anything to do with weight is because weight = gm

It's simple, dude. You need a warp engine to drive matter to light speed and beyond. It can be done... I'd say ask Scotty how it works, but he's dead, Jim.

Your welcome.
If you know algebra, look at the "Lorentz Factor" written as lowwer case gamma. This will illuminate why you would need an infinite energy. If you hit the speed of light, you divide by zero (which is an error). The limit as the denominator approaches zero is infinity. That is the closer the denominator gets to zero, the higher you number is. It approaches infinity as the velocity approaches 'c'. This is why you would need infinite energy/mass to go the speed of light.
Fascinating and fun stuff.

hmm, looking at this i remember the lorentz factor from high school physics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorentz_factor
it's a shame i only knew about this stuff then cause i had to know about it, now when i actually want to know about it, it's all just faded memories.
it's actually making some sense now though.

Cool.
Special Relativity is actually not that hard to get a basic grasp of (unlike general relativity). In my first University Physics class (mechanics) we did the chapter on special relativity first! (before even newton's equations) You dont need any of that other stuff in mechanics to understand how the eqations work.
Understanding why they are the way that they are is another story.

I remember reading somewhere that as you approach the speed of light, you become energy/light itself.

Read this book:
-------------------- Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self-helping man. For him all doors are flung wide: him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire. Our love goes out to him and embraces him, because he did not need it. ~ R.W. Emerson, "Self-Reliance"
