well as long as we're talking social morals, nobody has a moral responsibility to take care of someone who willingly excludes useful foods from their diet
people who refuse to eat eggs ain't anyone else's problem

and i agree that cultivation of a complete plant diet would be logistically more difficult than, say, just grain, veggies, and meat, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be done -- if some large portion of america actually committed to becoming vegetarian (and I don't just mean eating no meat, I mean working on the infrastructure), then i think we live in a rich enough nation that it could work out pretty much flawlessly

of course, for the 3rd world, that approach would be nonsense

Unless you are a vegetarian you're talking out of your ass.  The way we use animals is fucked up in general, if you want to stop it though you can start by giving up meat.

there is an enormous moral difference between slaughter for consumption and slaughter for entertainment

Yeah but you can still compare one bull to the slaughter of thousands in a single day.  Maybe they use the meat?  If they use the meat is it okay?

but the social/moral obligation to take care of those 'needy' are forced
on us every day regardless of whether those 'less fortunate' are willing
to get off their fat asses and work or not, so why would we not be
obligated to take care of the one that didnt want to eat their eggs

production is where the issue will lie, what happens during a time of
drought, do we simply allow millions to die off?

morality applies to the forseeable consequences of human actions
if those unable to feed themselves are not helped, they'll die -- thus, their death is a forseeable consequence of our inaction
in contrast, a person who chooses not to nourish themselves appropriately is setting themselves up for the forseeable consequence of malnutrition

with regard to feeding people, i'm not sure exactly what fat asses you're talking about
to my knowledge, any village that's starving to death is gonna be pretty willing to do what it takes to get food -- whether that's work, steal, or whatever

drink your suffering

it's the rBST cows you have to worry about, it's used to prolong milk
production, it poses a lot of problems including mastitis which is what
you saw in the propaganda film

people living fat on the government check... we're feeding them, of
course many of these welfare queens have plenty of disposable income
and could afford to feed themselves

why wouldnt we be moraly obligated to make sure they get their b12, iron
or what ever other pill if they decide not to eat from meat sources

if they have the resources to feed themselves properly, which is part of your premise, then we are not morally obligated to protect them from the forseeable consequences of their own poor (but free) choices

not even the same, milking cows doesnt kill the cow

I guess we could go for humane amputations and prosthetics for cattle

catch 22, do they have the resources, as I said, the logistics is where
the problem will be, sure it's available but if everyone is seeking the
same sources (excluding meats) then you've greatly reduced the supply,
some of these plant based sources are not readily bioavailable, iron for
instance, heme-iron is easily taken up, plant based isnt regardless of
the iron content of your veggies so now a source that wont be over taxed
needs to become available

just think of them utters as a tribal ritual, passing from teenager into slave mothers to milk the planet.  in a way...we are all sons and daughters of cows.

unlikely, as i probably eat as much meat as i do bread

i've re-read your post, and it seems now that you're asking about some kind of mandatory vegan state, where nobody in the population eats meat
that was never what i was talking about -- giving up meat is a choice (or at least it is in america), and as such it is the people who make this choice who are responsible for their own nutrition
as long as one has available to them free resources which could be put towards sufficient nutrition, nobody except themselves are responsible for their nutrition

the situation is different in impoverished communities in, for example, africa, where people do not have enough resources available to nourish themselves
in that case, it is not the starving person who is morally responsible for their condition
