planting cacti in australia
    #11869293 -

ok well my parents have a small kind of hobby farm i guess in north central victoria (Near bendigo in australia) it has been very dry for the last decade or so there and the ground is a sort of sandy dry soil with lots of tiny rocks in it, it is almost always hot there and has rained very little for about 10 years probably ,more the olive trees (calamatas) that are there stuggle to grow to any large scale or produce any real amount of fruit due to the scarcity of water, my question is would it be viable to plant in various locations small peyote plants and san pedro seedlings? its very secluded and no one ever ventures near there so poaching is unlikely does anyone see any issues with doin this? is it possible kangaroos rabits or wombats or somthing would try to eat the cacti? also another question howcome there are no cacti in australian desserts the prickly pare seems to grow everywhere but somehow no cacti have managed to escape domestic gardens and grow wild in the vast australian deserts (to my knowledge anyway) is it not ideal conditions for cacti?

I think Kangaroos eat San Pedro cacti, so you might wanna put a fence around them or something.

Looks like some can grow out there:

Naturally,

Cacti ONLY grow in the Americas except a species of Rhipsalis that grows in Africa.

It's no different than asking why Kangaroo don't live in Africa.

Opuntia and Cylindropuntia have naturalized themselves in Australia apparently due to a Gold Rush.

What are your lowest temperatures in the winter?

Good point Scruffy.

I think the word I meant to use was introduced during the Gold Rush.

I heard this from Karode and would be interested to hear more on the subject.

It's quite feasible to plant cacti in ground in the area you live at, although you might have to baby them for the first year or two to ensure they adapt to the new environment and that no marsupials take a liking to the taste. I have seen pics of some very healthy specimens growing in ground in Victoria so with a little work and some research it is possible.

@Cactusdan, Their are rumor's that some prospectors used them to conceal claims but they weren't introduced during the gold rush, some species of Opuntia were used as fencing for cattle though. For a bit of background on the Prickly Pear and methods used to control it in Australia, read here.

I know that cacti are native to the Americas, but I have been growing them in Europe since 1957.
