Warning: Johnson & Johnson recalls Tylenol, Motrin,, St. Joseph's Aspirin...[US]
    #11887766 -

January 22nd, 2010 - Examiner.com

A mold smell that made people sick has caused Johnson & Johnson to issue a massive recall on over-the-counter drugs including Tylenol, Motrin, and St. Joseph’s aspirin.

This is the second such recall in less than a month because of the smell which was first reported to McNeil in 2008. Federal regulators have criticized the company for taking so long to respond to complaints and that it failed to inform the Food and Drug Administration promptly.

The recall includes some batches of regular and extra-strength Tylenol, Children's Tylenol, Eight-Hour Tylenol, Tylenol Arthritis, Tylenol PM, Children's Motrin, Motrin IB, Benadryl, Rolaids, Simply Sleep, and St. Joseph's aspirin.

The recall includes caplet and geltab products.

Consumers are urged to check the full list of recalled batches at http://www.mcneilproductrecall.com.

About 70 people have become ill with symptoms including nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhea. Some just noticed the smell.

Chemicals on wooden pallets are to blame for the smell and the company has said they will stop shipping the products with the same materials on the wooden pallets.

McNeil received a letter from the FDA for violating manufacturing standards and failing to report and investigate the problem in a timely way.

The FDA wants to know why the problem wasn’t reported sooner and has given Johnson & Johnson 15 days to respond.

Tylenol Arthritis Caplets were recalled in November due to the smell and almost three weeks ago the company expanded its recall to include more batches of Tylenol Arthritis Caplets.

The company said it is working with the FDA.

I am not sure if this is "Seattle only" or not, but I noticed the recall sign at a QFC self-checkout stand in North Seattle yesterday.

Nation wide. They're off shelves all the way over here in Ohio too.

Nation-wide indeed. They're pulling the stuff off the shelves here in Vermont too.

This thread was moved from Shroomery News Service.

Reason:
This news story is outside the scope of this forum. We do not discuss OTC drugs in the Shroomery News Service, so I'm moving this to the Pub.

I am going to PM Motaman and ask him to include what Wronguy said in the Shroomery News Service Rules thread.

In the rules it says "drugs in general", so he should change it to "illegal or prescription drugs in general".

Alcohol, cigarettes, salvia, and bongs are OTC, can we discuss them in Shroomery News Service?

I was just trying to stop someone from possibly getting poisoned...

I personally very rarely frequent the pub, so I would have never learned of the recall (had I not been the one to post it) with the thread located there.

Any opinions?

Funny how you say that and only have 3 more posts in news service than in the pub.

It is hilarious, isn't it.

When I first joined the Shroomery, I spent time in the pub, and posted 434 times. Nearly all of those posts were about a year ago.

I stopped hanging out there long ago. Now I spend my time in News and MH&I.

Don't you have anything better to do than look up how many posts I have posted in each forum?

You should probably just change your mood back to butthurt.
I remembered when you first came here and posted in the pub, I liked you and liked your posts and thats why I not only remembered you posting in there but brought it up.

I am no longer butthurt, but am tired. I will keep my mood what it is for now, until I am again butthurt.

Any other opinions on whether this article was appropriate for Shroomery News Service?

I'm sorry you don't agree with my decision to move this thread, but we're trying to keep the news service commensurate with the general discussion and purpose of this community. This news story will get the attention it deserves in this forum.

For the record, I will repost the news service forum rules:

Welcome to the Shroomery news service forum. This is a forum for members to post news that may be of interest to the Shroomery.org community. Before you post please familiarize yourself with these few simple guidelines:

I read the guidelines, and assumed the article fell under "drugs in general". People getting poisoned by popping pills seemed drug related to me.

I have no problem with it being moved, I just think the rules should be clarified to exclude OTC drugs if we cannot discuss them in News Service.

I have no beef, I just want the rules to be clear.
