Thin mycelium, first time grow and a little shaky. Thoughts?
    #11819813 -

First grow, journal below.  First things first:

My mycelium is thin, just not ryzzy, the water content of the jars is good, everything followed to a key.  Does this mean the only other explanation is the genetics, which is what my searching/reading has lead me to believe?  I'm just curious.  The strain is Chilean (last months strain of the month on ralphsters, who's services i'm very pleased with I might add!)  I also have some golden teacher jars started, so when those get going i'll be able to differentiate the two..

here's a picture:

on top of that.. what does a guy have to do to get his journal looked at?  i've never done this before, and i'm trying my best - comments would be fantastic, lol - I've learned tons from RR's and Roadkills videos, done a great deal of reading..  But I'm quickly learning experience is EVERYTHING in this hobby, I'm getting a feel for it, but I can only hope the wiser more experienced people will have something to say.

there also seems to be a lotta controversy on keeping the inoculation points taped/etc.  I followed the video and used micro pore tape, my question: if my jars DO need the oxygen, will they be able to get it through that tape without any worries, or would re-sterilizing my incubator and taking the tape off be the smartest/fastest method?

I hope this isn't too redundant, I did read before posting.. I just feel awfully alone on this whole jig.

thank you very much for any thoughts or consideration

If your mycelium isn't rhizomorph, it's not a problem.
Greedy mycelium is wanted, because often it's a better performer, but that's not always the case.
You're probably fine with your jar. I've grown excellent performing mushrooms from non-rhizomorphic mycelium, as well as lame mushrooms from highly rhizomorphic mycelium.

Since you're doing the PF-Tek and therefore have a layer of dry Verm as a barrier for contams, you don't need Tyvek and anything similar. It should work fine without covering the holes, but if you feel better about it, take a piece of tinfoil and wrap it around the lid.

FAE is not important, when it comes to colonization, but gas exchange is. Tyvek for example allows GE but no FAE (which means no contams).
FAE is important when it comes to the fruiting stage.
It's a pinning trigger and pretty much the best prevention for airborne contams, once any kind of substrate is taken from it's sterile environment.

Thanks man, puts things in perspective.

One worry I had when I made these cakes, is that I had purchased the vermiculite the morning of the boiling, and it was fairly moist.  I was concerned that if there were contams (which I doubt) they would be able to get through the verm due to it's moisture.  I figured because they were going to be boiled, moisture would have gotten into the verm regardless, or does that stuff actually stay dry??

I plan on letting the second set of cakes catch up a little bit (few days) then removing the tape.. It looks like it would breathe if it really needed to, but I am aiming for ideal conditions in every way.

Cakes are fun, but i'm already thinking about casings.. I'm getting ahead of myself, lol.

thanks again :P

Well, moist verm isn't a good thing, but only when it comes to rolling your cakes in it or other actions, that don't require sterilization.

Since you PC'd your jars anyway, it's not a problem, when the verm was moist (though try to dry it and store it at a dry and preferably cold place, so the environment does not benefit contam growth).

Yeah, I figured it wasn't a "good" idea.. for the first six (the chilean jars) I did try to microwave the verm on a plate for like five minutes, stirred it a couple times.. didn't bother with the second set of six though.

I unfortunately boiled these jars, not PC'ed - although I doubt I'm going to get any contaminants at all, which is a bold statement but I am kind of a clean freak.. not even kind of, I have a pretty bad case of OCD.  Smoking weed helps, but I can't afford it.  People around here charging 30$ for 1.7g, which is just insane, even immoral if you ask me.

I'm planning on doing another 12+ jars in a week or so, as soon as I get some more spare money for spores/BRF/jars.  I've been looking at strands.. Penis Envy 6 and Redboy have caught my eye.. plus Ralphster's strain of the month deal, I guess I'll be trying hawaiian.

I also am putting in for a free print from the FSRC, I'd really like to help those guys out sometime down the road.  I wonder if I did design work for them if they would use it.. their layout is too simple, and I have way to much free-time.

When I roll the cakes I planned on letting the verm sit on a cookie pan in the oven for 30-45 minutes @ 350, or something along those lines.

I'm a student.. and I've been caught between majors for a while now - I just have way to many interests.. anyways getting to the point..

As a hobby I've always wanted to be an inventor, on the side.

I was thinking.. bamboo might be a great application in mycology.. I'm going to keep my eyes open for ways to apply it.  Who knows, right? :P

Yeah I guess it's not really "thin" so much as weak.  I was just tripping because it wasn't rizomorphic.. and still growing at an alarming rate.  That jar was only five days old..

thanks a lot though guys :P  i love challenging myself, and perfecting whatever i do, so criticism and opinions are very welcome and appreciated.

You want to steam, not to boil!

When it comes too BRF Cakes, PCing not necessary.
1,5 hours of steaming on a steaming rack is good.

The first 50 grows I've done, were with the help of a steaming rack and a regular pot, and didn't have any bigger problems with contams, other than from unsterile prints.

However, the purchasing of a pressure cooker (it does not have to be an All American!!!, but just a stinkin' normal PC (doesn't even need to have a gauge) just make sure it's a quality one, because the China shit will simply make you wish you've invested a little more money!) would be a good idea in terms of successful grows of more "difficult" to grow species.

Oh believe me I 100% agree.  I went in on the supplies for this with a friend, supposed to be 50/50.  He claimed to have a pressure cooker, but turned out not to.  He really hasn't contributed much at all to this, and I've done all of the work, yet he's still getting half the cut.  It's bullshit if you ask me, but he is a really good friend, and trust means more to me then money.. although I don't know if I'm going to want to KEEP doing 50/50 (as in, after these 12 jars).. which seems like he silently expects that.. and he's a really paranoid person, so that kinda gets on my nerves, given that I have almost no social life outside of him, and there is virtually no risk here outside of freak accidents.

Trust me I know the results of poor pressure cookers.  One time me and my friend were doing some PF cakes about two years back, he was tripping pretty hard when he put the lid on it.. out of a sudden there was just a huge BOOM.. walked into the kitchen = glass, cooked brf and verm EVERYWHERE.  the lid even took out the hood to the stove, completely.  LOL.  That's what you get for buying a cheapy.

I plan on getting one :P  AMERICAN

I'd like to try other strains "eventually".  I kinda have it set out in my head like so:

first cakes from syringes
then casings spawned from cakes

then monotubs & making my own prints/syringes

then liquid culture & agar

after that I plan on actually investing some real money into this hobby, flowhood, basic lab equipment.

for the chilean jars i boiled for an hour and half.  for the golden teacher jars i boiled for two hours.  I'm sure they will be fine for now.

But yeah.. I was pretty pissed when I agreed to go in on this 50/50, and then he didn't even have a PC.  I even had to boil the jars on separate days... hence the 2 day difference from inoculation times.  in reality all he's done is buy the vermiculite, steal a 50W fish tank heater, and watch me do everything.

I guess that's what friends are for.  He is a really cool guy, otherwise.. just kind of expressing my frustrations over the PC issue.

Which is a good thing!

Which is not a good thing. Dealing with a loaded pressure cooker when you're tripping is a dangerous thing to do. The lid could have easily smashed his face (not to talk of all the glass etc. flying through the air).

From what you tell, he (although I believe you that he's a nice guy) seems to mooch on you pretty hard, when it comes to this topic. Maybe you should do it on your own and -when the occasion is given- trip together with him.

You might not need to keep all your stash, but in terms of a trustworthy relationship with a friend, you should probably talk to him about it and quit giving him half your crop. If it pisses him off too much, he should participate in the work of growing them.

But this, however, is nothing grow related and should probably not be talked about in the cultivation forums:smirk:

hi, I hope I am posting in the right place, I can't find the link to create a new post... anyways I have the same sort of of prob, having rye grains grown from a grain 2 grain transfer, and shaken once, have now totally colonised the grain.  But the mycelium is not as thick as the previous ( prior to shaking for ex )
I'll post a pic or two soon, because its way thinner than plurfekts, which seems fine to me. ( though a flash on the camera makes the mycelium seem bright white, whether it is or not ! )
I have left them for about a week since full colonisation and no progress in thickening of myc. I'm planning on casing in tubs with peat moss and verm and limestone

I'll post pics soon and anyones thoughts would be great
cheers

nice one, thanks for the link!
I hope these pics get posted properly...
so these are the pics of my grain jars that were made from g2g transfer, and they've been waiting for 10 days in darkness and cold with lids tight and with tape over the holes so they dont dry out...
(I was away)

If you look closely some of the kernels look slightly dry and/or yellowish, basically starting to look like cardimon seeds! (but only very slightly) I think I'll case anyway
And by the way, the mycelium at the begining (after inoculation), was really bright white and rhizomorphic, even after shaking a couple of times, it would grow back bright white. Then I used one jar for a g2g transfer to 6 other jars, and everything was growing fine. This thin mycelium problem only came up after the first shaking of these jars.

reminds me of when i got a free syringe from a vendor that isnt a shroomery sponsor.

It grew pretty quick and for the first week the mycelium was so thin it was grey. I was convinved i had cobweb and so were many others. Turns out that was just how the ginetics i had started out and it started thickening up near the end of colinisation and fruited wonderfully.

Micropore tape is fine, its breathable and will allow gas exchange, you also inoculate through the tape which theres no need to retape. Even with a needle hole, the micropore tape adds as an extra filter along with the dry vermiculite later, which to be honest does a pretty darn fine job. Ive mostly used drinking glasses with foil lids, no micropore tape, just puncture through the foil and leave uncovered and had a high success rate.

Dry verm as a filter, particulalrly the finer stuff is very good

micropore tape itself is also a great filter. A friend of mine uses jars with self healing injection sites, and a single hole in the middle with micropore as a filter for gas exchange and that works great too.

Another little tip, dont worry about having your jars in the dark, infact i believe that having them exposed to ambient lighting from the get go results in quicker pinning once birthed (providing yoiu gave the week consolidation) it certianly wont harm anything. Unless you need your jars out of sight, i see no reason to keep them from light.

Yeah it was just some mycelium! check out my grow, it's going great and I just updated some pics.

I took the tape off after about a week of growth.  No contaminants, almost all are done.

I exposed mine to light plenty every time I checked on them... like twice a day, lol.  Now that I have cakes in the FC it's hard to give a damn over the ones still incubating... but I checked this morning and five more are ready to go in :P

Shake that grain.
Both of your grows look good, I see no problems with either.
