Mycelium Growing..
    #322558 - 05/21/01 03:44 PM (24 years, 6 days ago)

I was wondering what the best technique and substrate is for growing mycelium fast. I was going to use the method of pouring the cranberry juice into the jars.... i dont have my own house so having an actual terrarium is out of the question cuz of my parents and i dont want it to have a bad taste.

For the mycelium growing, my friend suggests the following:
Either birdseed or Whole Brown Rice
If your using birdseed, let it simmer in water on about medium until the birdseed almost doulbes in volume. Then place about 3/4 of the way full in pint jars and pressure cook. After the jars cool, Innoculate with spores and place in a clean dark warm(86 degrees) until white growth appears then shake and let finish colonizing. If your using Whole brown rice, cook it first as per directions on bag. Then add enough vermiculite to keep it from sticking together and place in jars as described above with the birdseed directions and pressure cook, then let cool and do as above stated. Since your worried about space, when you go to fruiting stage, use a small rubbermaid container with a little pwet perlite in the bottom. Use a small muffin pan and crumble your cakes and sprinkle a damp layer of vermiculite on top followed by a dry layer of vermiculite. Get the rubbermaid container that is about 6X6X8. This has good height and small around the edges.
