Time for another one, Napolitano, to go
    #11725741 -

What passed through this moron's head, other than a stiff breeze, that would lead her to conclude, "the system worked."

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said that the thwarting of the attempt to blow up the Amsterdam-Detroit flight this week demonstrated that β€œthe system worked.”

What system was that Janet?  The system whereby you rely on inept bomb designers and fast acting private citizens.  Because if that's the system you mean then what the fuck do we need your fat, stupid ass for?

Yeah, who set up this whole DHS/State Department/FBI aviation security system, anyway? Heads must roll!

Who set up the State Department?  The founding fathers.

Meanwhile, it took 3 hours to notify Barry in Hawaii who, when informed, said...................nothing.

Does anybody still think it's a good idea to repatriate nearly a hundred Gitmo thugs to Yemen?  Barry is strangely silent on that, as well.

Great, you know your history. I notice in this thread about the Secretary of the DHS that you didn't mention its origin as a executive agency.

Sounds like you are being purposefully obtuse by ignoring the crucial link between contemporary aviation security and the creation of the DHS, which this topic basically revolves around.

Maybe you've already forgotten that the DHS was created specifically in response to airplane-based terrorist attacks on 9/11, and had the ambitious goal of making air travel safe by coordinating intelligence-sharing among government agencies, establishing a no-fly list and other tools, and largely nationalizing the airport security industry.

If you disagree with Napolitano's statement, you probably believe the DHS is at least a partially dysfunctional agency, a conclusion I would support as well. The fact is, despite attempts at creating a comprehensive security system, a) intelligence management is still not as robust as it should be, evidenced by the Christmas Day incident and b) airport security can be thwarted by people that live in mud-brick houses.

I think the current management is woefully inept, beginning with their decision to alter the English language to delete "terrorism" from the lexicon and instead embrace the concept of "man-made disaster".  Morons.

This guy had been flagged, by his own fucking father no less, and was still allowed to get on a plane.  And for this egregiously incompetent jerk off to say that "the system" worked?

Of course the system didn't work. Unfortunately, no matter how superbly security screening is carried out in the US (not to say that it is necessarily carried out superbly in the US, mind) that still leaves the security systems of the hundred and whatever other countries with flights into the US. Please don't tell me anyone here is astonished to be told Nigerian security folks are less than diligent.

There was a stop over in a real country and passenger lists have been required for, oh, about 8 years or thereabouts.

But the most incredible thing is this retard saying the system worked.  No, it fucking didn't.

Linguistic hyperbole aside, this same incident could have happened any time in the last 8 years. Remember those stupid goddamn color terror alerts?

It will be interesting to learn what happened after the Nigerian's father reported him to the U.S Embassy.

It certainly will.  Which doesn't have one fucking thing to do with the fact that the person ostensibly in charge of Homeland Security thinks this failure is a success.  She was a bad pick and this just proves it.  Thankfully nobody died.  Let's get her out before there are casualties.

> The system whereby you rely on inept bomb designers and fast acting private citizens.

The sad thing is that is the system they have in place.  All the BS that we go through... no books or blankets on your lap during the last hour of flight... take off your shoes before boarding the plane... no more than 8oz of liquid and it must be in a clear plastic bag... etc... are for one thing and one thing only... to provide a false sense of security to the public and to make it look like the government is actually doing something to protect people.  It is a bunch of smoke and mirrors.  In the end, they depend upon inept bomb designers and fast acting private citizens (or air marshals if they happen to be around).

> Meanwhile, it took 3 hours to notify Barry in Hawaii who, when informed, said...................nothing.

Yo, cut the Messiah some slack.  He was busy relaxing.  Even the prez deserves a little down time.  It isn't as if the system didn't work and the plane blew up.  Everybody survived.  What was the O-man supposed to do... congratulate the terrorists on a good attempt?  Do you really think Mr. Change has time to deal with every little terrorist attack when his schedule is swamped with countless vacations, pointless flights on Air Force One, expanding socialism, increasing the size of the government, increasing government spending, increasing tax revenue by attacking carbon emissions, and justifying wars while accepting Nobel Peace Prizes?  Messiah he may be, but his teleprompter is mortal.

Maybe it is time to put that mandatory work program into place for the high school kids... let them take their turn protecting the airports!  Yum...

Event A: 8 months into Bush's presidency, after multiple warnings were dismissed in an inexplicable attempt to stir up shit with Russia... worst attack in American history, thousands die while Bush talks to kindergarteners.

Conclusion A: He is Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchhill rolled into one, and this was the most heroic day of his presidency until his bold response to Katrina. No heads need roll, as this was all Clinton's fault.

Event B: Some jackass lights a match on a plane while flying in from Nigeria.

Conclusion B: Fire the entire executive branch.

The Messiah didn't even bother to frighten the nation... he simply took away your right to read a book, cover with a blanket, get up to use the restroom, or any other activity while flying.  I wonder how long before we need advanced permission to approach an airport...

Multiple warnings of a nebulous nature vs..........this guy's fucking name.  Do you understand what I am saying?  They had the guy's name.  He was on a list.  They didn't check it.  Because there is no such thing as terrorism for this head of the DHS, only man caused disasters.

I have no idea what your blather about Russia is.

And I suppose it's a good thing that Barry stayed calm cool and collected and didn't inadvertently scare the shit out of a bunch of golfers.  Because we all know how emotionally vulnerable they are.

Light's a match on a plane?  That's what you think happened here?  It's a good thing you are in no position of responsibility.  For anything.

As much as I despise this administration the only head I'm calling for here is Napolitano's.  Rightly so.  She is inept.

Of further note is that this enemy combatant is going to get a lawyer and Miranda rights.  This is unfortunate.  A rather large piece in today's NY Times about the radicalization of Yemen and how al-Q has established quite a presence there.  This guy has said he was trained and equipped in Yemen and that there are upward of 20 others just like him currently being prepared.  Can anyone say "Waterboard".  Because I sure would like the names of any other trainees and their trainers.  But because this is being viewed as a law enforcement issue we can't do it.  Too bad.  Lives could be saved.

Quote:
Since 2001, there have been 28 failed terrorist attacks against the United States. That averages out to about three foiled attempts per year. That was until this year. This year there were six failed attempts that make 2009 a banner year β€” the most in one year.

The fact that six attacks were foiled is cold comfort.  In stopping #28, America just got lucky. Despite the warning signs, authorities did nothing to impede Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's travel. The plan of attack on the Detroit-bound plane didn't work and the passengers and crew stopped the assailant.

Additionally, in 2009, not every terrorist attack was stopped. In November, Nidal Malik Hasan gunned down a dozen of his fellow soldier and shot-up a score more β€” despite the fact that there were red flags
galore that he was some one to worry about.
Others were recruited here to attack over there including five young men from northern Virginia who shipped-off to Pakistan; youth from Minneapolis enticed to fight
Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate; and David Coleman Headley, who allegedly helped plan the Mumbai attacks and other potential strikes.

In short, the system has failed a number of times in 2009. To make matters worse, Washington hasn't shown that it cares very much. It doesn't like to call the war a war. It doesn't seem to care that some Patriot Act authorities will expire in 60 days. It would rather the Department of Homeland Security push for a mass amnesty bill than fight terrorists and try control the border.

There also seems to be some evidence that this guy was radicalized by the same Yemeni Imam who was pals with Hassan.  Assassinate him now.  With extreme prejudice.

And for a final outrage of the day (I hope) we have the idiot Present's idea to close Gitmo and repatriate over 60 Yemenis.  That even after some of the previously repatriated Yemenis have been found to be back at their same old shit.  Brilliant.

Is that why or is it because some low or mid-level bureaucrat didn't do his or her job? I haven't read anything that states that high-level officials were ever even aware?

Because no one will fill in his shoes, right?  The problem is not some schmuck loon; it's the failed state of Yemen which is being filled with radical Somalis from across the water.  Unless the health of both of those states are at least brought out of anarchy, you can kill whoever you want and it won't make the damndest bit of difference.

A full 108 Republicans voted against the conference version, including Boehner, Boehner, Hoekstra, Pence, Michelle Bachmann, Marsha Blackburn, Darrell Issa, and Joe Wilson.

The conference bill included more than $4 billion for "screening operations," including $1.1 billion in funding for explosives detection systems, including $778 million for buying and installing the systems.

Unsurprising. If you think back to the days between Bush's "inauguration" and 9/11, there were basically two things going on in foreign policy. One was the neocons praying for a second pearl harbor so that people would shut up about the stolen election. The other was a push to put missile defense batteries in eastern Europe to piss off Russia. Despite the outgoing Clinton administrations' warnings that Islamic terrorism would be the #1 threat they would face, despite all the shit Clinton took for trying to kill bin Laden twice with cruise missile strikes, (which were allegedly sabotaged from the inside and were then indisputably savaged by the Republicans in public as a waste of time, not that these are necessarily connected) despite the USS Cole, despite the 'vague warnings' that terrorists were planning to

A) attack New York City
B) use airplanes and
C) one in particular was described as the "type of person who could fly something into the World Trade Center"
(if you think any of these are lies, let me know)

...when the Bushies released the Official Top 5 Threat List in early '01, Russia was on top, followed by China. There was no mention of stateless terrorist groups whatsoever.

I know that for the Glenn Reynolds / Glenn Beck generation of right-wingers, history started on September 12, 2001, one day after President Clinton resigned in disgrace. The rest of us, well, we know what a real fuckup looks like. Not that this was not a fuckup, but people like you gave Bush a free pass as if 9/11 were an act of god. There were no calls to fire anyone. There were only calls to rally around the flag, support the wars, and go to France if you weren't down with that.
