purple passion flower vine

Hey guys, I have no experience with plants, so here's the situation:



I got a whole bunch of cuttings from KBG1977(Thanks!) back in september, but i killed a bunch by trying to put them in crappy soil... then there was one...

So this one is in perlite, with a little bit of peat on top. I've been watering it from the bottom mostly, sometimes from the top with a drop of 7-7-7 fertilizer diluted with water. It has been like this for about a month, but hasn't grown that much. I've been keeping it on a south-facing windowsill

what should i do to make it grow more? should i mist it? should i put it in potting soil? thanks

also, in the future, should i cut off the flowers so it can concentrate on growing bigger?

Were the leaves on the original cutting or did they grow after planted?

Dude,is that the only one that survived???You should transplant it into bigger pot with some good soil,and give it full sun light if at all possible.If it's too cold out,put it under a nice grow light.they need tons of bright light to flourish.I can't get any more of those,because I moved from Florida,so keep her alive!!!

This plant is a maypop. 

Some others passionflowers are noted for being mild MAOIs.  (possibly this one too)

Ive got a decent vendor on rooted cuttings so if anyone needs a little direction just pm me.

The one thing i can tell you. They like to be in the ground and my cutting didn't even grow until mid summer. But once started, it grew like 10 ft in a month.

I'm not positive that one's a pure P. incarnata.  I'd place my money on an ornamental hybrid with some incarnata genetics. The leaves just look off to me, they seem to have a bit too much glossy/luster.  All the Passifloras are beautiful plants, but P. incarnata is the only one that's regarded as safe as an ethno. 

As for growing it, they are seemingly light-cycle dependent, only putting out new growth when day-length is adequate (Spring-Summer, fruit ripening in Fall).  The old growth won't really die unless there's a frost, but it does get rather ratty looking.  Mine in the greenhouse haven't put out new growth since September-October sometime.  The tropical Passifloras, such as edulis do not seem dependent on light cycles for growth and seem quite content to put out new leaves even now in the dead of winter.  Hopefully yours rooted already, and will resume growth in the spring, or put out entirely new shoots from the base.  I suspect if it has lived this long, it has some sort of root system, but I couldn't say for sure. I think rhizome cuttings are a much better option for propagating this plant personally. 

P. incarnata is used as a relaxant because they contain the harmala family of alkaloids, much like Syrian Rue or Banisteriopsis caapi.  The concentration is significantly less, and its not comparable either Syrian Rue or caapi, but the effects definitely exceed placebo by a significant margin.  Some people report feeling relaxed/stoned after smoking or making it into a tea, and that it helps them sleep.  A bowl before bed gives me a terrible night's sleep full of tossing and turning, but always seem to wake up feeling significantly more rested than I expect.  This may be more personal body chemistry, as I generally have extreme trouble falling asleep.  Passiflora incarnata will alter a trip on any of the classic psychedelics, psilocybin, LSD (& LSA & related), mescaline, etc. though be careful, because it is possible to put yourself into serotonin syndrome, which is EXCEEDINGLY unpleasant and potentially life threatening.  It happened to me once using LSA and a tea made from P. incarnata fruit rinds, which have considerably more alkaloid than leaf material does.  In my experience, P. incarnata does not so much intensify a trip as it does increase the duration considerably.  Again, this is personal experience, so take with a grain of salt.

The leaves at the top are new leaves. I don't have any special grow lights, but i have a 75w "daylight" spectrum bulb. if I keep that on like a 12/12 cycle (in addition to sun from the window), will that help at all?

how about a larger pot with equal sphagnum peat moss, perlite, and topsoil?
