Its only a bad thing in an economy driven by exports. Japans does a pretty good job exporting things to the world, the appreciating yen is gonna make that harder. Their trade surplus is gonna take a hit.

Also, if the apprectiation is fueld entirely by specualtion the bottom could have a drop out.

What if said appreciation of the medium of exchange occurred simply because technological advances allowed for production that was better, cheaper, and of larger volume?

Do everything to create more production without money manipulations.  A free market produces more because you do not see systemic misallocation of resources.

Government spending is less efficient than the private sector.  See the recovery from the Depression of 1920 and contrast with "The Great Depression".

It has been big government, central bankers, and central economic planning that got us into this mess.  It is only insane for us to think that they are the solution.

Can someone explain to me how the average American would be hurt if their dollar gained in buying power right now???

Gold continuing to hit record levels is a sign that the dollar is in trouble.  How can anyone debate otherwise?

It's not hitting record-levels once you adjust for inflation.  See above.  And even if it was, the price of gold skyrocketing in a few months is much more likely to be due to mass panic by feeble followers than a sign of actual impending doom.  Again, see above.

Good point to note

Considering that we have not yet seen the effects inflation of the money supply I think that your reasoning is erroneous.

The current price of gold is in anticipation of the eventual rise in prices throughput the economy.

Bank reserves are spiking...

While (commercial) lending has been severely curtailed...

We have not seen the real effects of the new money creation yet...

(Both images taken from http://mises.org/daily/3898)

Perhaps the reserve money is being held back in anticipation of bailing out commercial real estate?!?

If you've been waiting for a chance to buy some gold cheap,  now's getting to be a good time.  The USD seems to be rallying on a weak Euro.  I'm thinking gold will move up in january after christmas,  and after the euro thing blows over.

Someone from here said around a year ago that $900 was to high and that they'd buy if it came down to $800...

Wow, you really think gold is cheap right now? (Current comex quote: $1084) What about 1 year ago?

The USD is rallying against all the major currencies: EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, AUD etc.

Also, where do you buy your gold? You seem to refer to the Comex spot price, but in reality any amateur buying gold is going to pay a different price than the Futures. So it really only matters how the price moves at your particular dealer. And if needed what price can you actually sell it for? What was the retail price for 1 oz back when gold was $1200/oz compared to now at $1088?

I mean you can never win because you aren't on the inside, the pro's are just trying to game innocent people. You buying a few ounces will have absolutely no effect, meanwhile the central banks own most of the gold and the half of the rest is controlled by small groups of professionals in NYC and the City of London.

I advocate buying large amounts of physical silver.

Silver could go up 20X whereas gold will possibly increase 5x in current prices.

Buying large amounts of silver would also screw over J.P. Morgan and that is certainly something to smile about.
