americans getting a check from the government this year?

I've heard mention a few times, of a lot of americans recieving at least a $300 check this year from the government (to stimulate the economy they say), possibly in May. Anyone have any info on this? Such as who exactly qualifies to get this money and so forth. I can't seem to find out info on this.
Thanks!

Yes the government is giving us back some of our money that they took. It's kind of a desperate measure but I can't say I'm against it. I think we deserve a refund for the poor service we've been getting . If you filed your taxes it should be automatic. See http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23143814/
Quote:
Rebates are to go out beginning in May to taxpayers and low-income people, including seniors living off of Social Security and veterans who depend on disability checks. Businesses would get tax breaks for investing in new plants and equipment.
Most taxpayers will receive a check of up to $600 for individuals and $1,200 for couples from the Internal Revenue Service, with an additional $300 per child. People earning at least $3,000 and those who owe little or no taxes would get $300 for singles, $600 for couples. Those making more than $75,000 and couples with income exceeding $150,000 are to get smaller rebates — $50 less per $1,000 they make over those thresholds.

Heh, while I like the idea of a refund for the poor service we've been getting, and I certainly don't mind having some extra dollas in my pocket... I think a true economic stimulus should have targeted improving our national infrastructure while creating jobs (such as highway and road maintenance projects). I'd also have preferred to see specific cuts on government programs to pay for this stimulus package, instead of just throwing off more cash and continuing to raise our national debt. I do appreciate the fact that the gov't attempted to address an economic problem quickly, but their execution seems very flawed. One piece of conjecture that seems appropriate is this: Our government is borrowing money from China, so that American consumers can use that money to buy products imported in whole or in part from China. This begs the question of which economy we are truly stimulating here?

I am pretty sure its only borrowed money. They are not giving us back something we have already paid but actually loaning money that they plan to get back in the future.
I think whatever amount you get for this special rebate this year will actually be taken off your filings next year. For example, if you get the full $600 rebate this year, if your normal tax return would have been $2000 next year, you will only get $1400.
Its point is to stimulate the economy but by the time it gets here the problems we were facing a month ago will be gone, although our economy still wont be in much better shape.
The whole thing doesnt make much sense to me and I can see why its been such a long time since they did something like this. The worst part is according to polls the vast majority of Americans are going to use this money to pay off debt, which as we know, does not add any new money into the economy resulting in any sort of stimulation, as the debt they are paying is money that has already been spent.
God bless the USA.

This being an election year is merely a coincidence. No connection whatsoever.

Americans from Nome, Alaska to Tierra Del Fuego are getting checks from their governments and maybe even foreign governments.

Do you have a link for this? I don't believe it's correct.

I'm still not one hundred percent sure I'm correct either, but it is a fact that has been left out of a lot of the press coverage of what these rebates really are. There was a story of CNN deleting some information about it from one of their articles.
Anyway I heard it a while back and didnt see much else about it.
http://www.bargaineering.com/articles/2008-tax-rebate-stimulus-package-explained.html
"Is this a rebate? What is it a rebate on? The funds are rebate on the taxes you will pay next year, they are a rebate on your 2008 tax return. Rather than give it to you next year, they are giving it to you now. Next year, after you file your taxes, the IRS will calculate what you should’ve gotten and adjust your return. So if you received too much “rebate,” they let you keep it. If you received too little, they decrease what you owe next year"

After reading a little more from people way smarter than me the way I understand it is
For tax year 2008 there will be a tax cut on your first $6000 of income, from 10% to 0%. This will result in a tax rebate.
Instead of giving you the rebate then, they are giving it now to help stimulate the economy. If you take it, next year your taxes wont be any more than they normally would, but you will not get to take advantage of the drop from 10 to 0 percent, as you took the rebate. So you'll just pay tax like you always did and go along your merry way.
If you dont get a rebate this year, for whatever reason, next year you will be paying less taxes than you otherwise would, as you will benefit from the drop in tax rate from 10 to 0 and you will get your "rebate" then.
I could still be wrong.

this is a pretty good post.
but would it really have been that easy for our government to do?
if so, why didn't our government think of it?

Our government actually has thought of a similar plan, and even better, acted on it!
Quote:
The Civilian Conservation Corps (1933-1941) Source: Visit u-s-history.com for Full Article
In his first 100 days in office, President [Franklin D.] Roosevelt approved several measures as part of his "New Deal," including the Emergency Conservation Work Act (ECW), better known as the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). With that action, he brought together the nation's young men and the land in an effort to save them both. Roosevelt proposed to recruit thousands of unemployed young men, enlist them in a peacetime army, and send them to battle the erosion and destruction of the nation's natural resources. More than any other New Deal agency, the CCC is considered to be an extension of Roosevelt's personal philosophy.
The speed with which the plan moved through proposal, authorization, implementation, and operation was certainly a miracle of cooperation among all the agencies and branches of the federal government. From FDR's inauguration on March 4, 1933, to the induction of the first CCC enrollee, only 37 days had elapsed.
[...]
The program enjoyed great public support. Once the first camps were established and the CCC became better known, they became accepted and even sought after. The CCC camps stimulated regional economies and provided communities with improvements in forest activity, flood control, fire protection, and overall community safety.
[...]
The Civilian Conservation Corps was one of the most successful New Deal programs of the Great Depression. It existed for fewer than 10 years, but left a legacy of strong, handsome roads, bridges, and buildings throughout the United States. Between 1933 and 1941, more than 3,000,000 men served in the CCC.
The effects of service in the CCC were felt for years, even decades, afterwards. Following the depression, when the job market picked up, businessmen indicated a preference for hiring a man who had been in the CCC, and the reason was simple. Employers believed that anyone who had been in the CCC would know what a full day's work meant, and how to carry out orders in a disciplined way.
