I'm not going to pretend like music festivals are going to save the world through rock and roll, but I'd prefer to keep them as genuine, raw experiences of music, rather than over-produced, commodified spectacles.

I'm not going this year because of the increase of sketchy assholes and ridiculously fucked up folks running/stumbling/sneaking around.  There were several moments this year in the camping area that really scared me.  I'm not driving 13 hours and paying $300 for that.

The music was awesome, but ime there were alot of bad vibes floatin around there this year.

Why sacrifice a good time because of something like that? Corporations are just a part of life, might as well accept it.

Honestly I prefer to look at that as raw genuine experiences fighting back and gaining a foothold in the corporate world.

Who cares what company puts Rothbury on... although the lineup this year didn't strike my fancy as much as last year, I've heard nothing but good things about it.  It's well known that larger fests have a different vibe than smaller fests.  If you like smaller fest vibe go to smaller fests?  :hook:

I'm usually anti-corporation, but this one provides a very entertaining service and wrangled some fantastic artists to put on some great shows.

Illness, death, love, sex, hunger, joy... these are all parts of life. Corporations are not. They are an artificial legal construct, and I don't have to have them in my life if I don't want to. None of us do. We vote with our dollar, and I don't want to support a corporate model for festies.

I tend to agree with your second statement though. I'm not sure these people know what they are getting themselves into. I think they underestimate the power of the psychedelic experience.

All I'm saying is that these festivals are the result of almost 50 years of western psychedelic culture, and I think the psychedelic community needs to think long and hard before it hands over the reigns to corporate bigwigs who only worship the Almighty Dollar. Do they care about our community? Do they care about our values? They'd just as quickly hire a private army of riot police to lock your asses up if they ever felt threatened by you.

Do you want to be a spectator? Do you want to be a commodity? Or do you want to be a participant with intrinsic value that doesn't involve a dollar sign?

You guys really need to check out Mulberry Mountain Harvest Fest though... fucking CRAZY ass vibes. Probably a lot more dangerous... virtually no security... but oh my god can you get away with ANYTHING there.

In northern California there are a lot of "camp out" gatherings during the summer. 3+ days at the end of some random dirt road up in the mountains with a bunch of cool heads, thick vibes and music that literally never stops. Virtually no "Security" and absolutely no cops even remotely close, there's no need for it, everyone is there to have a good time and most of the time the events are on private property....

Most of these camp out events that i go to have in the neighborhood of 200-2000 people...

Same thing that happened to Bonnaroo with MTV.

Rothbury was actually started by the people that did Bonnaroo because Bonnaroo sold out.

Now Im starting to think these people just go around starting huge festivals and selling them off to the highest bidder.

What a lucrative business.
