Do you believe in corporal punishment for animals?

If a pet continually does something it shouldn't, is it okay to give it a smack?

Usually a soft but firm slap of the nose tells the dog no.

How hard of a smack?
Some people dont believe in hitting animals, others think its vital to their discipline.
Me? I think that if you establish your dominance beforehand there's no need to hit . Speaking to them in an angry voice should be enough.
If they keep doing the behavior, you can put them in the bathroom for 10 minutes and theyll get it eventually.

( This works for dogs atleast because of their pack mentality, im not quite to sure about other animals.)

I'm of two minds about this.

I've had animals since I was a tiny kid, and I've seen them raised both ways. I would have to say that a small amount of physical punishment is okay w/ a dog, much like a small child. But its VERY easy to go overboard. I dont think its required.

I personally wouldnt hit an animal that was mine. I just dont see the necessity. Hitting a dog isnt going to make it listen any more. Especially when you go overboard and freak the dog out. Then you just have a fucked up dog. And as far as cats go, actually hitting them is pointless. Maybe a spray with a water bottle when they are kittens, but using force on a cat is just stupid. They dont understand that language like dogs do.

There are better ways to get around teaching your dog what not to do. The punishment really does have to match what the dog did. I think one of the best things, and it fits a lot of different situations, is turning the dog on its back. It puts it in a submissive state, setting you as the pack leader. Just be aware of what you are doing and how it seems in a "pack" concept.

Our dog is VERY obedient (pure bred german shepherd) and has a very good temperament. She has never hurt anyone and the worst thing she does is bite your arm during play (not too hard, I don't discourage it as it is how dogs naturally play. She knows how much is too much)

One time we took her for a walk around the river on our property and she killed a platypus. We knew there was no other way to tell her not to do as such (she knew she was in trouble because she hid under the house lol... she never does that) my stepdad dragged her out and whapped her across the nose whilst holding the dead platypus in his hand.

She hasn't killed anything since.

She is the sweetest dog and LOVES everything. My mum is a big fan of german shepherds and has owned them ever since she moved out of home (my grandparents always owned purebred golden retrievers)

In the case of dogs attacking children/etc I believe that putting them down/killing them is totally wrong. The children or people may think that the attack was unprovoked, but dogs are purely territorial and protective of their turf/owner/alpha male. It may be that the dog assumes it is higher in pack than the child or person it attacks and chooses to assert it's power... it's a grey area between the communication of people and dogs. They're only doing what comes natural to them. Dog's should not be put down for this reason, but strong discipline like a GOOD hard rap on the nose should teach the dog no, which probably could only be administered by the alpha male/owner/pack leader to show the culprit that it's actions are wrong.

I love my dog

I spray my pet lovebird with a water spray bottle when he makes too much noise, sometimes, but I usually yell at him..when he is being obnoxious. I would never hit him.
I hit the cage a few times before..but there was a reason.

Yeah, I don't think hitting a bird would work too well.

Earlier, I smacked my cat on the back after he knocked over a glass of water that I had just set on the floor. He often pushes things off of tables and breaks them, and I need to teach him not to.

birds in cages is wrong :frown:

so is clipping their wings.

I believe if you need to put your pet in a cage or lock it up, you shouldn't own one.

yeah im just saying

birds in cages is wrongful imprisonment
If I had a pet bird I would train it to return to roost, I'd say it can fly out whenever it wants and go out for as long as it wants, but if it is trained to come home for food then that's coo

it can be done with wedge tailed eagles, but I don't think ur allowed to have those as pets (theyre endagered)

You know a lot depends on how you act. I have 120 pounds of solid pitbull who I close fisted punch two or three times turn and run and all he does is chase me down and pretty much bag and tag me but act a little bit pissed off and the slightest tap has him yelping cause he knows he's in trouble.

Just seems to me that dogs are so loyal that it hurts them more that their owner is pissed at them then it does to beat them. (I may be way off track on this)

Just as I don't think it's okay to give a disobediant child a spanking, I don't think it's right to smack a misbehaving pet. There are other, non-violent ways to teach obedience.

Using my foot I've launched my cat into the air a few times, chased her around the yard and house, booted her softly (enough to knock her over). This is only when she threatens or attacks my other cat. She's learned to not try anything when I'm around, but if I'm not there she'll chase the other cat all the same. Cat's learn slightly, but they don't seem to learn permanent lessons, unless they're still kittens.

It pisses me off when my old cat bullies the young one (who's developped a great fear of everything in the house).
